i have a n reg 16v, i have read the sticky in the mk3 maintenance + info section about this and i have looked behind the blanks next to heated rear window switch and slidy bit of plastic above cigarette lighter and cannot find the plug? there are some wires that lead to the lekky window switches but thats it?!? any ideas where it is? cheers
-
on your year it should be behind the slide panel above the ashtray
-
Pull the ashtray forward & release the little tab inside so it comes out, to the left of it is a smooth blanking plate which will slide to the right (where the ashtray was) revealing the diagnostic plug! :afro:
-
i have looked it that exact space im not completely retarded lol, nah seriously it is not there could it have fallen down behind or something? Cheers guys!
-
yep its possible..time to root down behind the heater panel!!
-
how the frig do i get in there?
-
i see the red mist decending, lol
i had to delv into the gf's polo down there right mare, good luck !
-
-
its only a few bolts as you dont need to remove the heater unit.. the surround and swithes all need to come off, ashtray out and hopefully you'll spot it!! there all simple screws that hold it together (no odd sized torque bolts luckily)
-
ok thats good news thanks very much
-
hi, just removed all what you said to remove and still cant find it, also rear heated glass button is disconected as is the fag lighter, both connections no where to be seen? any reason someone would do this? I brought it about 2 months ago and keep finding things that are beginning to annoy me lol, list so far:-
heater blows hot air only
abs bulb has been ripped out  (i forgot to check when i brought it doh!)
diagnostic plug no where to be found??
connections to fag lighter and heated rear screen no where to be seen
rear lekky windows not working
But then again i only paid £750 near mint bodywork and fsh just wanna get the little things sorted. Cheers for the help so far BB it was easy to get the panels etc out, first job i have done on a car! lol
-
maybe up behind the stereo, thats where im gunna look today! any other ideas?
-
okay.... I'm in a generous mood.... I don't normally brave the rain, thunder and lightening for 8am photo-sessions.... apols if it this is where you were checking before, but it is a little rubix cube if you aren't ready for the cryptic VW designers....
NOTE ALL PICS ARE CLICKABLE

also - (sorry it's a bit late for this advice, so more for future Mk3 buyers) is that when you turn the ignition the first click, the ABS light should come on for a few secs... and then go off again....
it's common trick to pull the bulb out as they're easy to trash and can be fairly expensive to fix (I know I've done both steps.... I think it was £100 for the front rings and sensors + labour)... back ABS is apparently a lot harder to break.
-
dude i have already looked in the the place it should be! and i have also taken out the switches and heater dials etc and still see nothing! Appreciate you getting rained on for me but i have already done that lol sunday morning aswell
-
no worries - was worth it just to clear it up 100%... and it's only about 3metres fro mteh front door to the car door....
plus, 20mins after posting... almost completely clear skies!!! it appears karma does exist.... I'm off to scrub up the Mk3 and get some photo's for the sale!
-
ashtray out, and pull toggle on underside.

basicly i have removed everything you can see in this pic, also fag lighter connection is missing as so is rear heated window connection. Apreciate the effort mate hopefully this will help someone else. hmmmmm mine needs a clean also
-
take off the dash undertray next, then lie on your back and have a good root around under there! should have a yellow, grey/white, brown and red/white wire to it.

Think i have found it! Can someone confirm this?. Also there are 4 more connections im assuming there my fag lighter and rear heated window but there is two more unidetified connections?!? i took the big panel off from under the steering wheel (i assume thats what you meant rubjonny) had a look round and there it was! Why the hell has it been pulled through that side i dont know, i wonder if i'm able to pull it back through to where its meant to be? Thanks very much for all your help peeps
-
well the plug looks right... or have you just added that on??
-
yes mate, they're all the plugs that you've being dreaming of owning lol. Now to get playing match the plug to it's owner.
-
woohoo! sorry that was a bit gay  glad to have found it though hopefully i will just be able to pull it through to where it lives without cocking anything up!
-
I can't believe how many disconnected plugs there are, what moron put that fascia back on without noticing half of the dash was redundant??
-
it wasnt me i've only just brought the car lol, as far as i know its only the fag lighter and window heater not working so god knows what the others are for?? tried pulling it through but all the plugs are getting caught so gunna need to take lots apart on the weekend to get in there. i dont understand why they are so far over (right over past the ignition etc) it looks like it has been threaded through for a reason but what reason?
-
Do all you're switches and heater dials light up?
-
If I remember correctly..
The large black one is your diagnostic port
The small black one to the right of the picture is for your cigarette lighter illumination
The white one is to power your cigarette lighter
The one at the top is for your heated rear screen switch
And I don't see a 'fourth' one? Unless that red thing is another plug? In which case, it probably isn't used.. although I think red plugs were used on the airbags.
I'm not 100% sure though and it's 10 to 2 in the morning so don't fancy going outside to rip my dash apart..

Why not lol. Cheers for the info mate appreciate it
-
C'mon Joe, where's your dedication to the cause?
-
i think the red one is for the headlight range control motors, which you probably dont have :P
-
Haha I've been known to do such things at midnight but never at 2 in the morning.. although I'm currently tucked up in bed ill so that doesn't help my motivation lol..
