Title: Brake upgrade HELP PLS!!!!!
Post by: benji mk2 on 16 August 2004, 09:22
This weekend I set about removing my old engine in preparation for new paint job and new engine. Whilst doing this I decided to fit some 16v Mk2 hubs with the bigger discs and callipers. After a bit of fettling I got them on but have had a bit of trouble. First is that the two holes for the suspension mounting plate don't quiet line up and second is that when I put the track rods back in both the wheels point in different directions. MY question is can I sort the first problem by using the original mk1 bolts as they will go in with a little free play? And can I sort the second problem by just adjusting the track rod???????????                  Any help would be very welcome, cheers  Also does any one know where i can get hold of a genuine vw n/s wing and bonnet?

When I Changed the suspension on mine my wheels were facing away from each other when all was back together, this was roughly rectified by track rod adjustment then fine tuned with laser alignment at the local garage. As for the first problem I'm not sure, don't like the sound of things not quite lining up and a little free play.  Anyone else know?  ???

I figure that the brakes are kinda important, so if you are in any doubt as to your work, get it into a garage and have them check it out.
Hope you get it sorted, mk1 brakes are pretty poor at the best of times. The upgrade should make them feel a bit stronger.

MK2 hubs are different from MK1, the arm on the hub that the track rod end goes onto is at a different height. MK1 racks are mounted higher and the arm is in the centre plane of the hub, mk2 have the arm about the same height as the top of the bbj mount. Would not recommend the route for a brake upgrade, use the 16v discs and callipers with some adapters.

I have looked around for some reasonably priced adaptors, only to be told that they only sell kits :-\.
Have modified the mk1 hubs to take 280mm discs and callipers ;).
