Title: engine cleaning

My jetta has got a rather oily poopy looking engine bay. I spent the day carefully cleaning everythin but dont dare touch the grimey block. I know you can buy various heavy duty greasers, but is are there any top tips on homemade recipes for cleaning off all that grime and oil?
