Title: Should one wave?
Post by: starlingadey on 02 June 2009, 09:27
When one encounters a fellow Mk 5er? I confess the idea makes me feel a bit foolish but wouldn't want to let the side down if its expected. Haven't been waved too myself yet though....or do I have to go first lol??!

I give a salute but it's not always reciprocated...

Are most mk5 owners VW enthusiasts?  I would say 99% are not so you'll get loads of blank expressions if you do wave.  Mk1/2/camper/original beetle owners would be.

I always try to analyse first b4 a flash or wave, but by then its too late! but then I havent seen many Golf gti's etc...a couple of pensioners in a ED30 most times, thats about it!
But when I have waved to the odd golf I get a funny look.... 'like who's that cu*t '

When one encounters a fellow Mk 5er?

Yes one should.  And one will find that in 90% of cases, one will either be ignored or looked at like one has a mental problem

I've flashed and nodded and got a nod back once :D

Not bothered otherwise, there's too many about - it would take most of my journey up just flashing and waving!

The thing is, the chance is high in any situation when one waves! not just in a golf!....
Next time when your out driving just wave to a random person and out of reaction, they will wave back before they think ''Who's that!?'' ....quite funny!!
(and I don't mean the Bus w8nker's wave!)

Yep thats very true :D

Also does anyone else with Xenons keep getting flashed by other road users (usually in old cars) thinking you've got high beam on or something?

I think most MK5s are still in lease ownership, so the owner doesn't give a crap about the scene.

I've given a few drivers nods and got them back, I don't think they like to be associated with waving people, especially if they don't know you!

As for the Xenons, not yet, which I'm surprised about as I find a lot of OE kits are crap at levelling!

a year ago the E30 drivers were nodding to each other, not any more, many GTIs and E30 around now. But we look who's in the other car!

Post by: dTEA on 02 June 2009, 15:29
don't wave!!!  its an earnt privelege for "scene car owners"  !! but seriously, if the car is obviosuly modded then its worth a nod, otherwise as said it'll be just a geezer in a car... if you owned a corsa would you wave at people??

We used to wave when we had a Ford Ka (but they were brand new then)

Z3 and Z4 drivers wave, and also have a good forum and owners club community

I thought Vdubbers were the same?

No need to differentiate between a GTI and Ed30 but it's not difficult to recognise GT's and diesels.

Which is good, i can reconise the R32 from a mile off. But the others, especially when black, just sort of blur into one for me.

Ill get my coat now haha

Yes, waving at a Passat thinking it was a Mk5 R32 has been mildly embarrassing at times! Especially when doing the proper "V..W" wave : -

I agree ^^^^

I've come from a very rare car to what I consider to be a 'common' car, which is what I want for the foreseeable future. I'm debadged and no-one takes a second look, which is good when parked up in the middle of town, but not so good when trying to persuade cars to get out of the way on the m-way.

Is that the proper VW wave? Looks to me more like the 'ROCK' devil horn wave,
Whenever I was on the VW rallys in my bug it was thumb and little finger with other fingerssquashed up, like on the badge,

Reminds me of the South Park episode where they all buy Hybrids and pollute the atmosphere with Smug. :D (can't find a yootoob clip)

Don't you think people think you're crazy enough waving randomly.. Let alone mangling your hand and shaking it at them!!

I usually only wave to those in the exact same car as mine (Black 3 door mk5 GTI ed30), which is in fact quite rare in my area (county durham). That's why I get so excited on spotting one !

County Durham you say? ;) I'll look out for you!

I couldn't tell the difference between a GTi and an ed30 though

Yes, it's quite difficult to distinguish - Ed30 has a small rectangle badge at the down right corner of its tailgate. And it usually comes with 18''wheel and tinted rear bumper as standard. Tha's all about the appearance.

I once spotted a black 5-door ed30 in the Tesco parking lot in durham and I parked right next to it to pay my greetings.

I often go merely for a drive on Sunny days (sometimes even raining days). May favourite driving route would be A691 westbound from durham to Consett and switch to A694 at shotley bridge and all the way to Newcastle. Or follow A697 switch to B6344 to Rothbury

only time that I acknowledged a fellow GTI was in Manchester. I just parked up on the main road and exactly the same car, GTi, Black, 17inch wheels, 5 doors, sat nav, leather cruised up next to me waiting in the traffic queue. I checked out his car, he checked out mine, we caught each other doing this, smiled in an embarrassed way and went on our separate ways. Oh dear.
