Golf GTI 1.8T - Needs new or rebuilt engine
Hi all
My wife has a Silver 1998 S Reg Golf 1.8T GTI that she was driving when she hit a rock, smashed the sump and it lost all the oil.
Garage has replaced the sump and it runs (not ceased) but oil warning light stays on.
They have then taken the head off and insurance company looked at it and says needs a rebuild and this would cost more than car. It is in a garage after all so labour costs high.
So after that long intro – I am just settling with the insurance company and then have a golf that I am not going to do anything with – head still off as the cars at the garage
Anyone have any ideas what to do with this car as it seems a waste to just scrape it - Its in reasonable condition for the year and drove wonderfully.
Suggestions welcome
Thanks
Mark

I would get a second opinion first of all....then go from there

wow that was quick
I have had opinions from garage and also insurance valuation guy - who is a Golf GTI fan and both say the same
To rebuild in garage will cost more than insurance will pay so the insurance company will only go the write it off and here is a chq route.
While not the best thing from my side - thats whats going to happen (dont you just love insurance companies) so its more about what to do with it - is it worth trying to sell - would anyone want it etc etc etc
Just a shame to see it be shipped off to be crushed

i''ll have the head off you if you want to sell it.
then you could put the rest of the car on e bay for spares or repair

not worth it if your paying a garage to do it considering it's age, but if your handy with a spanner an engine change isnt too bad  shame it's not a 2.0 as I have a spare engine

might be worth sourcing a engine and getting a garage to put it in complete . would be loads cheaper that way .
