Title: Is this a good price for an 8v cambelt fitted
Post by: Mikester on 01 June 2009, 12:58
Booked mine in to the local garage. £105 supplied and fitted.

Sound like a good price?

Its way overdue, and i dont want to risk it snapping before i drop the VR in, which could be next week, or next month. And with all the mileage to shows, it wouldnt be great! lol.

Think i have heard people get quoted £300 or sumfin, so i agreed on that basis. lol

Comments?

I'd go with that..and if you know them, it's convenient etc..i'm sure some have managed better deals for a cambelt change but it's who and what you know beforehand that helps.
For instance i had mine changed at a VW maindealer along with other service items and it came out with the belt fitted a tooth out!

Good price, I was quoted £150 a year ago.

Yup, they could easily charge £150 and it still be acceptable so i would be very happy with that quote

Does the Tensioner have to be changed with the cambelt? I heard it does from a mate who had a mk3 gti. (his cambelt broke at 120,000, even though it had a cambelt fitted at 100,000 but not the tensioner. and was told the tensioner should have been changed which has caused the cambelt to snap. Cheers guyz.

leave it til it goes ping if you're putting a new engine in anyway. would be a waste of your money.

Yes, very strongly recommended. Also that you change the water pump too.

£105 is very good price for it btw mikey

Remember on a golf engine the water pump is not driven by the cam belt so if the water pump fails its not likely to cause damage to the belt,  Its something i tend to leave out providing there is no nasty noises or play in the shaft.

However when it comes to a garage doing it, its much cheeper to have it all done while its off,  for the price of a pump its silly not to,  but if its goto be kept cheep its safe to leave it out!

60k mile interval for cambelt is enough for the limescale in the water to knacker the pump. Id change it while im at it. Id also change the pas and alternator belts too.

Tbh, im just changing the belt as its overdue, the engine will probably only do another 2k miles, so from the long term point of view of water pumps and tensioners i probably agree that it dont need to be done.

But the cambelt was last done 4 years ago at 93k and its now on 130k. So just want it as peice of mind, and i dnt mind spending £105 on it, as its a very sold engine.

Might also play in my favour when i come to sell the engine and box on to someone else.

But £105 seems to be a good price.

How much are tensioners? Might aswell ask for that to be fitted too.

Mike

not overdue if its only done 37k miles then, and if your only gonna do 2 more, why throw £105 at it???

I have no receipt to prove it was done at 93k other than the last owners word...

I dunno, i dont feel like im throwing it away, its just peice of mind mate. Dont want any unexpected problems.

I agree with what a few of the others have posted, why bother to spend any money on an engine that is going to be coming out very soon. Id much rather spend that on goodies for the new lump.

all belts changed, at vw in cirencester for £50! plus a stamp in the book! then again a good pal is manager of the parts department!!
i always reccomend to people just turn up at you local vw garage and poke ya head in the workshop! ask one of the mechanics if he will do some work for cash!! usually one of them will and get it done in there free time!
