Title: uh oh, problems already :( windscreen wipers
Post by: Dempsey on 01 June 2009, 08:38
hey guys, i have a problem with my windscreen wipers.
when i put them on, they are very slow on the way up, and sometimes stop on the way down.
is this the wiper motor? will it be easy to replace? and will it cost much?
anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like the motor you can pick them up 2nd hand for £40 (ish) easy to change, could be the wiper stalk but my money is on the motor.

99% will be the linkage - very common. Might be able to unseize it if not may need a new one -IIRC cost 38 from VW.

when i put front wipers on they would go up very slowly then either stop and stay in iddle of screen or just return to there normal position. They fitted a new linkage in the eend as they coldnt free it up.

Mine was doing this a  few months back.

Turned out to be the linkage. Cost around £40 and got my mate to fit it for £20

I use AH Griffiths in llantrisant, or all spares in taffs well, or pengam partmart near blackwood, just depends what they have in stock really

When mine went in my MK4 the linkage had seized which in turn caused the motor to burn out so needed a new motor (cheap as chips off ebay) and linkage (local VAG supplier). I managed to replace them myself with a bit of common sense and some tools :)

It wasnt hard.

My front wipers did this not so long ago, they even stopped dead in the middle of the screen at one point it was like that for a few days (luckily we didnt have any rain)

Now for some strange reason they have started to work perfectly again and i havnt had any problem with them since hmmm

Yea that's how it happens they are intermittent..my wiper are working fine at the mo but everynow an then i have to pull em to get em going. I replaced the linkage a couple years ago that sorted the problem until a few weeks ago so now i think it's the motor gradually on it's way out. Once they new motor is in a will strip the old one an see if it can be refurbed.
