 doing my head in this is..
the belt on my 1986 8v GTI is tensioned right ..
ie 90 degree turn between thumb an finger at the longest section
yet when the car has been running for a short while it screaches..
must be it getting hot suppose
any ideas ?
have tried a bit more , an less tension on the belt an yet it still does it !!!
-
tensioner bearings are failing change it quickly.
-
bugger was changed a little while back when i did the timing belt (but a GSF one)
are they poor quality ?
is the genuine vw one any better ?
-
mmm just taken the tensioner off , the bearing spins nice an free an no noise so seems OK ?
still doing my head in...
-
is it definately the cambelt and not the aux belt?
-
good point , will take it off tommorrow an see , worth a go
i may be barkin up the wrong tree :undecided:
-
Yeah, sounds like it to me. does it stop when you rev it up? see if the fan belt is slack too...
mine is making a whining sound too, replaced the tensioner yesterday, i think its the cam bearing/seal in the rocker cover/head...
-
whineing is normaly overtight belt
-
mine whines loads, but the cam belt is at the correct tension, as if i slacken it off a little, it flapps about. i thought it may be the head/rocker cover cam shaft seal/bearing?
-
bearings dont do whineing at least not for long, cam bearings are same as big ends and mains just the shells arn't removable
-
yeah, the roller bearings for the cams looked fine when i did the cam chain so im confused. Its strange that it only does it when i tension the belt correctly, its a new tensioner, and it did it with the old one too. it sounds like its coming from the top of the engine, but i cant be sure. i have used a special listening device (a coal chisel), but cant really find the noise. When i drive the car, i can hear it as a whine.

You dont have roller bearings for the cams and have either of you checked to see if theres any evidence of the belt rubbing on the belt cover as that sounds like the more likely problem if its not the tension or the tensioner.
