Title: Dash top rattle - unable to solve
Post by: jaydubveedub on 31 May 2009, 16:07
Hi all,

I'm new to this forum having recently purchased my Mk5 GTI after a long wait!

It's got the usual rattle from the dash top above the centre air vents. Main dealer that I bought it from tried to fix under warranty before I picked it up (noticed on the test drive). OK at first, then started again (mainly on hot days). I've had it out and run the car without the mesh in and it's fine. I re-fitted the mesh packing it out with some thin foam, but not solved. Any ideas? Which part is it that needs looking at?

Cheers

good question there. I had my car at VW dealer for the same problem, and they did not fix it either. Rattles on. Especially when cold.

I sat mine on velcro and fixed it. Dealer couldn't quite get the rattle silent either.

Had mine fixed years ago and the dealer solution was foam/velcro which has worked a treat

Hi, I had this problem too.  I had the car into Alanday VW (A406 London) under warrranty two or three times to try and resolve this issue.  Each time it seems to be resolved for a day or two and then the rattle reappears.  Alanday ended up changing the the top air vent on the last visit, but there was no joy.

So I resulted in opening the top dash vent myself.  I knew it was the air vent fitting as when I drive the car and hold the vent down the rattle disappeared.  So I managed to get some car trade sticky putty (like black blu-tak) and apply this in a thin roll all around internal lip of the air vent fitting.  Fitted it back together and the rattle has disappeared (been almost 1 year now) .

Now I have rattling noises coming from my sunroof, but don't fancy opening up my headlining

isn't yours 2005 model?
The build quality deteriorated over time, as VW realised that car was expensive to build

I have a 2007 model and no rattle either. Did have creaking door seals though, but this was solved with the stuff they use for the eos as they seem to have more flex being roof less
