cam wear or worn valve abs should have no effect on top of engine.

cheers thats what i thought at first but seems to only happen from 2 -3k but only sometimes seems bit worse under load but not at high revs ??? peter

Not sure what your mileage is...I had something very similar with a Mk2 16v i owned.. top end rattle would come and go on tickover and you could hear it sometimes when pulling away..was the hydraulic cam followers, replaced them all and no more noises.

Yea it sounds like the hydralic lifters to me, they tend to rattle when they get old. Mine were about £4 each, but i get them in sets of 8, there are 16 on yours, so you need two sets.
Its not a particularly nasty job, cambelt needs to come off, so stick a new one on with it, and a tenssioner, madness not to unless you know its brand new!

cheers everyone took to my mechanic he said engines had it ,he said it sounded more like piston slap oh well.but heres the good news put it ebay as is and a local mechanic has offered to fit a good engine for a very very good price so cant wait to get it back peter

WOAH! Piston slap does NOT mean the engine has had it
My 1.4 used to knock like hell!! people used to say my bottom end was about to give in any seccond... And sure enough it was just a worn piston, I ran the car a good 20,000 miles, slowly got louder and louder, i got my self a doner 16v engine so i decided to rag the hell out of my 1.4, knowing it had a bad piston, trying to blow it, after all that, when i stripped it down and inspected it, there was slight ovaling of the piston but no damage what so ever...
Modern cars do get piston slap and its something you live with, it will cause you to loose your hearing before the piston goes pop  Generally speaking anyway, sometimes it can scratch the bore, causes it to burn oil etc.. but the engine hasnt had it, you can usually slap some new piston rings on or a new piston, depending on whats actually causing it.
Go out and find a ford Zetec engine that doesnt have slight piston slap when cold.. you wont find one, never does them any harm....
