Title: Officially part of the MK5 club.
Post by: the dude on 29 May 2009, 21:45
Hey all,
well after deciding the work needed on my MK3GTI would be too expensive I sold it on to a nice chap off this board on Monday,
Started hunting for the MK5 I have wanted for quite some time, found one on autotrader about 60 miles away, looked nice, but owner would not knock a penny off the price, so left, then after looking at some well dodgy private ones, called them up, and made him an offer, £300 less than asking price and 6 months tax thrown in too...tidy.
Tesco said my loan should be with me by the Thursday, well Thursday came and went, and it was only when I checked the papers I realised they had put a wrong digit in the sort code, phoned them and they said it should be in by close of business today, meaning I could not pick it up til off work next Tuesday.
Well, at 4pm, the funds got in, so at 4.15 we were in the wifes car in rush hour traffic trying to get to the garage before it shut at 6pm, It was close, but:
Out with the old,

In with the new,

One with the wifes trusty VW

And the funniest car reg location iv seen on a reg plate

These pics were a bit rushed as only got home about 8pm, the cars nothing really special, 5 door, armrest, heated seats, and LOADS of other stuff which I have no idea how it works, but its mine, and its loved now. so a few basic mods, wheel refurb, coloured skirts to come, and it will be the bizness.

seems a lot of us are getting MK5's, making the most of the stale market possibly, or just watching as others talk about their golfs is just too much,
Also realised the ace pic of the bug attack on my numberplate, there were a few explosions on the windscreen, (from tehm, not me  )

Ah yes Titty Ho, I used to work for a motor factor and they'd ring up and start the converstion with "Hello, Titty Ho!"  I'd have to put the phone on hold and recompose myself!

Nice motor, any plans for it?

nothing much really,
Plan on getting the alloys refurbed and get the black on the inlays, (even though they are only the 17's)
Lower it a bit, new exhaust and colour code all the cheap black plastic,
any other suggestions?

think I will be going for the millitek, and also heard that to respray the skirts and bumper should only be about £180, quids in.
The old GTI sold for about £800, took it for its service last month and it was worse than I thought it would be, the guy there said old VW's are rusted to hell but underneath are sound, or look ace and then need a bit of work underneath, mine was the latter,
Cleaned every sunday, and waxed regularly too, loved it, and always got comments on how nice it looked, but with possible family starting wanted something safer too.

just chatting to people on otherboards, is that not a good deal? \i have never had parts resprayed other than a rain cowl on a 72 beetle, and that was £30

Sounds too cheap. I phoned around a few places and cant for the life of me remember how much they wanted, just that it was much much more than that and I soon gave up as it was just going to be too much for what I was actually getting.

I agree with Alan on that one, sounds too cheap!!!

I went to see a guy who's done work for me before. He's cheaper if it's a cash job. The lowest he would go to spray mine is £350.........cash.

She's in on Monday!!

Think I was quoted 230 ish just for the side skirts, can't remember how much for the rear bumper.  At which point I suddenly started liking the contrast between black and red....

The bumpers need to be smoothed down to do a proper job.  Maybe you're just being charged for spraying and they don't intend to smooth them?

Nothing worse than doing half a job.

ok thanks,
My brother in law owns a composite mouldings firm, and he is able to do spray jobs as long as I supply the paint, doesnt have anyware to bake them, but may ask him,
Is it possible to sand the plastic down yourself or is it a tricky job?
Are ED30 skirts already smoothed? May be worth me finding a set of them and getting them resprayed?

i'd say that without the proper gear then trying to do the smoothing would be sh!te.  The ED30 stuff is surely still not cheap unless from breakers eBay etc....
