Hey guys, hoping you guys might be able to point something out to me that might be obvious to you, but not me!
I have just completely rebuilt the engine with another 2l bottom end as the 2E block i had last, made short work of the piston rings - turned out to be cheaper for a new block than to actually replace these. All good on that part. It has has been faultless right up until the very last part!
I have fitted a new rocker cover gasket (the new rubber ones not the cork). Tightened it down starting from the bolts in the middle and working my way out.
As soon as it got hot after about 3 mins of sitting at idle there is smoke coming from just above the exhaust manifold.
On closer inspection, oil had been pooling on the top of the inlet manifold, dripping down onto the exhaust manifold and causing a nice bit of smoke and a nasty smell..
Today i have refitted it, but this time sealed it with an instant gasket which seemed to solve the issue for about an hour or so, but has now sprung a leak.
Do you guys think the oil could be coming from some where else? I cant think that the seal that i have just made with the gasket is leaking as it was given pretty generously! The only thing i can see is the fuel rail, but that would see more flames rather than smoke if those were leaking!
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
luke

How tight have you done the rocker gasket up as they really dont need much pressure on them to seal and the steel rocker covers bend like mad if you overdo it which makes it a ballache to seal them though I wouldnt know about the cast ali types. IIRC the torque setting is only about 7lbft or 7Nm (sorry, cant remember which :P).

Have you got the right studs for the rubber gasket? Should use the ones without a shoulder due to metal rings in the gasket.
-
As above, rubber gaskets use different studs to cork gaskets.

aha, could be the issue then straight away! thanks guys. the front 4 studs came off with the nuts, so i just replaced them with what was in the box, but didnt replace the rears as they stayed in.
will give this a try tomorrow after noon.
Thanks chaps!

as above really but i always smear a little oil where the gasket sits instead of putting it back dry witch works well but doesnt cause any smoking the oil seems to congele a little and give a good seal...
with the rocker i always sit it on,do up all the nuts until there just touching the metal and do them up 1 at a time with 1 turn each to get it on nice and square and always when the engines cold.
hope you sort it

Been driving the car for a day solid now and it seems to be fine since replacing those rear studs.
Cheers for the pointer guys, wouldn't have noticed!
