Well I'm a BBS slag so would say go for the BBS RXIIs or RXs, they are overplayed but for good reason, they are good and set the car off a treat, other favourites include Borbets and TT Comps however both, in fact, all the above are quite pricey.

That being said you could pick up a second hand set for a fair price, especially the BBSs.

You may get them on with adaptors as the offset is 45 so a 15mm adaptor would leave you with a final offset of 30, bigger problem may be the tyres that are fitted which I suspect will be too big for the golf.

I think a set of BBS RX / RX2's are the ultimate.... I hunted for some for about 6 months for my (4-stud) cabriolet.... ended up with the "RS", which are virtually identical to the RX2 (but BBS rolled them out in 16" rather than only doing them as a special order item for VW!)....

It might be possible to get D90's with adaptors & tyres for £400 - £450.

A cheaper alternative might be 17" Audi TT 6 spoke alloys with 205/40x17 tyres.

I paid 350 for my d90's, 5x 8x16's with 195-45-16's and adapters. They sell for more now though.

Anything from et30-et40 should be fine

205/40/17, 195/40/17 or 185/35/17 are all great tyre choices

Depends on the width of the wheels I guess
