Title: POWER STEERING DOES NOT LIKE THE WET
Post by: Judderi on 13 August 2004, 16:26
Hi i got a H reg mk2 with power steering but whenever it rains my steering goes very heavy and lumpy as if the power steering is cutting out. Whats going on? Is my car just a big girl and doesent like getting its hair wet?

your probably missing the splash guard that protects the belt from getting wet. bolts onto the inner arch

Does sound like the belt could be slipping in the wet.

So do i need to tighten or replace the belt? And where is it located and what does it look like?

I have the same problem with my Mk2 16v, the splash gaurd is missing from my to, so obviously this does its job. Anyway i spoke to a fella down at AUTO CAVAN and he said before you change the belt rub some valve grinding compound into the sides of the V belt all the way around then run the car for a few hrs making sure you use the steering allot ie turn from full lock left to full lock right lots of times, this will roughen up the pullies which will be polished smooth at the moment thus adding to the problem of the belt sliping when water hits it.

as for its location, if you look at the alternator belt it sits below an to the left of that. The tensioner is underneath and is part of the pump.

Hope this helps

It shouldn't slip in the wet if it is adjusted properly, but if you want the splash guard:

I think you're looking for:

1 - 191 825 250 Or - cover - v-belt - no model listing
2 - 191 825 250 A - cover - v-belt - listed for GL,GTI,16V & G60
3 - N 901 066 01 - Speed nut x2
4 - N 015 946 1 - hex head panel screw x2
5 - N 902 076 01 - washer x2
6 - 811 807 577 C - speed nut x1
7 - N 011 665 3 - washer x1

13 - N 043 885 1 - hex head panel screw x1

I think #1 is for small bumper models, and #2 is for big bumpers.

I've heard it costs about ?12 from VAG.
