Title: Spacers with 18s
Post by: Car nut on 29 May 2009, 10:15
Guys do you all use spacers with your 18s or not bother?

If yes how much are you spacing by, so there is no rubbing?

Most people run them on the front due to clearing the adjusting nut on coilies as Rhyso said. My coilies are at a sensible height so i don't have this problem. Most people run spacers at the rear for the wide look.

I have always stayed well clear of spacers as i think they are a bad idea in general...

I would do it as Steve has done, the same amount all round. Otherwise you will upset the track of the car. The fronts stick out slightly more than the rear because it is FWD. On RWD cars the rear wheels protrude more.

Change this and you risk upsetting the cars handling...

i've seen a couple of MKIVs that had the rears out further than the front, so that the wheel was sitting more in the arch, looked really smart, but could mess up the handling.

15mm's on rear 5mm on front, no handling issues I can assure you, thats with 8.5j rims too. Does scrub over sharp dip's and bump's but only a touch.

Spacer's are no differant than smaller / larger offset wheels. Anything over 5mm requires longer bolts too suit (e.g 20mm spacers minimum 15mm longer bolt, think mine are 18mm longer)

HTH Sam  (still here just about)

at the end of the day it's up to the individual, it's not something I would mess with personally
