Title: Acceleration - wheel size.
Post by: seismic22 on 28 May 2009, 17:39
OKay so this may seem like a stupid question but if i was to fit 16" wheels to my 16v would i notice a drop in acceleration or would it be barely noticeable!?

Although im keen for the car to look nice im more interested in its performance than cosmetic appearance.

Cheers

you proberbly not notice any difference...I've gone from 15 to 18's on the rat and can't really notice

The bigger diameter wheel the lower tyre ratio aspect you need

for a 15" its 50
16 = 45
17 = 40 and so on.

The idea is to keep the rolling radius the same so then you wont get any differences in speed etc.

I would add that I noticed a small drop in mpg when I was running 17"s

The only thing i have noticed is the price of tryes!! (225/40x18 are ££££) oh and better grip but slightly harder ride!!

Thanks guys! I dont know why i didnt think before about what len said.

On another note, say i was to keep 15's would 215 45 rubber fit on the standard rims and would this combination help improve handling or would it make it worse because of the side wall being too vertical/straight?

Again as i said before im more interested in how it performs than how it looks.

Cheers

I would stick with 195/50/15's all that 215/45's will do is throw your speedo out and rub the arches.

195/50/15's are actually slightly undersized as they should be 205/50/15's as factory standard.
215/45/16 should be virtually the same as the standard overrall rolling radius and would barely affect the speedo readings what so ever.

205/50/15's were only factory fitted on later cars, 195/50/15 were standard on earlier cars, I switched from 205's to 195's with no problems.

mine are 205, 15, 50's.... on my P Reg gti... but not for long, getting some nice rims shortly... 17's.. sooo.... they'll be 205, 17, 40's
Can you get 18's on mk3s without any modification to arches etc? just a thought :)

No 18"s will not fit without a lot of work plus look way too big on a mk3.

I ran 17"s on mine, you need an offset of et35 with 205/40/17's and you should be ok.

No should look fine, if they do rub on the rear trim the plastic arches down 1st.

Even 195 40....

But then you need wheel whore stickers to make them fit.

215's WONT rub!

I have a set of 17x8's with 215's on they are fine! So yes siesmic you can fit those 215/45 x 15's!

Oh and for further information 225 wide will rub! But not where you think! They will rub the struts on the inside unless you space out!

Not as easy as that, offset could mean no they won't fit, I had a set of Seat alloys with 215/45/16 (et38) and they touched the coilovers so could not be fitted.

Well maybe if you use only the correct offset then! :rolleyes:

technicalities here.... but are you aiming for outright accelleration or just acceleration to 62mph?

technically the smaller the rolling radius and wider the track, the better the accelleration will be...

however I maintain that I could get to 62mph faster with my 205/40/17's purely 'cos it was all 1st and 2nd... now I have to change up around 59mph...

technicalities aside: if you keep the rolling radius the same and you're not losing traction (through silly-narrow wheel width) then accelleration should stay largely the same, unless of course you're going for cheap (heavy) alloys.... in which case it'll be like trying to accelerate with half a case of beer on each corner.
