Title: Getting a feeler...
Post by: Shady Pioneer on 27 May 2009, 23:35
Hello chaps.

Need to know a few things, now if I were to buy a MK4, which one would be best to go for?

I do a fair few miles, but no more than 5 - 6K a year so not really that much, do I get a dirty diesel or a 1.8T?

Give me thoughts :)

:P

What about mileage, now thing is, as my GL is going, I'm really trying to get a good idea of what to go for next, nothings defo at the moment, but if I were to go for a MK4, what kind of mileage on a 1.8T engine is acceptable? Like with MK3s over 100K is still gonna go strong...

Derv   not a great deal of difference in performance unless you get an R32

Ive just hit 100k. TBH mate Its not cheap to run my car but I love every second in it, the only way to tell is to drive the models and see which you like. But if you have been in a top range diesel you will know how much torque you get and its pretty impressive!!

How much is it to run jeynesey? MPG? Compared to the diesels? See I don't think I'd mind a diesel, but the option to tune the engine to get more out of it would be nice, as if I do get a MK4 I want to stick R32 bumpers on it and MK5 Anni wheels, I've seen on like this in silver and loved it. So I'd be in it to keep for a few years.

Well not certain on mpg as it fluctuates depending on how heavy your foot is   I would be happy with either though I think, im happy with a standard mk4 engine-wise so it depends how much power u want??!
Title: Re: Getting a feeler...
Post by: Shady Pioneer on 27 May 2009, 23:49
Well I don't want to get a low engine MK4, I want something I'll be happy with to begin with, and then will have the easy option to bolt on bits in the future to futureproof it.

I'm looking at spending about £2K, and am finding a lot of MK4 1.8Ts and Diesels for this amount, both ranges have around 110K - 140K miles on.

Post by: the_stink on 28 May 2009, 08:45
tbh mate if your doing alot of mileage you might be better goign for a gt tdi you will get good mileage anad you can still get power from them just look at Steve_PD got 200bhp plus a piss load of tourqe to match

I would say go for the 1.8t you wont be dissapointed but you prob wont see that good a mpg unless you drive like a saint plus you can tune your balls off!

either way diesel or petrol you can still style it the way you want will just be different under the hood

1.8T all the way. What power diesels you looking at anyway?110,115,130 or 150?

I can get 40MPG in my 1.8T

Post by: Shady Pioneer on 28 May 2009, 09:18
Thanks for all in the input guys :) I appreciate it.

If it was a diesel, I dunno which one to go for, whichever one I can tune the most I guess?

Is 110K - 150K a lot of miles for a MK4?
Title: Re: Getting a feeler...
Post by: T_J_G on 28 May 2009, 09:19
Not really, I always thing about 10k a year is reasonable. Have a look at what power diesels are in your price bracket. I think they'll be 110,115's or 130's.

Post by: Shady Pioneer on 28 May 2009, 09:24
Just having a real quick look, I can get 110, 115 and 130 within £2300. A fair amount of 1.8Ts are going for around £2000 with around 115K miles on them.

130's at that price range will be very high milers i would have thought

if you're only doing 5-6K a year and mainly short journeys then a 1.8T will be fine; if you do mainly long distance journeys then diesel FTW

although another thing to consider is that petrol prices have crept up recently

My 1.8T has done over 130K (bought it about two years ago at 114K). Still going strong and no major issues (apart from the fuse box on top of the battery failing - fairly common it seems though)

I always was told that the 1.8T is pretty much bullet proof as longs as its looked after (should be the same for any car really). Just make sure you get S/H and the car has had a recent water pump + Cambelt change and you should be fine. Take a look at the buying guide / common faults to help you avoid any real dogs.

I use my car for traveling to work every day, and manage to average about 32mpg on a 20 mile journey, with quite a bit of spirited driving / sitting in traffic. On the way home last night whilst the roads were empty after the gym, I managed to hit 46mpg. As long as you don't rag it everywhere, you shouldn't struggle with MPG.

If your only doing 6k a year you dont need a diesel   :lipsrsealed:
Plus for £2k your not going to get a good one, it would be a high miler in which things start to wear out and need replacing (bushes, clutch, turbo) and starts getting expensive to run

You should be able to pick up a nice 1.8T for your price range and try to get the lowest mileage car you can.

Oh and theres an initiation to get into the "elite"

I don't think it'll be too much, having a quick look on the bay, R32 bodykit is about £350, but then I need it painting but I can get that done for about £250 - 300. The wheels will be the mot expensive thing, over £1K

But I always find a way :P it does look lovely though :)

If you want the mirrors add £150 plus spraying, front lights £300++

Mine was up to 57mpg over a 7 mile trip.  this was last week, around midnight and about 11 degrees.
Buy a derv if you can find a nice one in your price range.

Still a rep though, need modding and may not fit properly
Seen a few gen kits go on ebay for £400-£500 second hand, I'd rather pay the extra and have something which you know will fit and will be stronger than fibreglass
