Title: Choosing the right model and right car
Post by: RoryW on 27 May 2009, 10:32
Typical 1st post

so currently I'm looking for a mk4 golf gti and obviously after a little advice.

Had a quick blip in my mates 2l gti at the weekend and loved it apart from the engine which tbh felt V slow compared to our 2l Alfa 147. So I'm considering a 1.8t, think I need to have at least 1 turbo'd cr at some point.

Seems to be a huge range in prices etc. If I were get the standard 150bhp vs the 180bhp would it be a simple remap or am I right in thinking different engines etc can
gain different figures?

Found and viewed a mint 180 last night and loved it. Only thing that held me off was mileage. It's sat on the 124k mark but has history etc and belts etc changed. Anything major that can go wrong when it starts to clock mileage up?

Any advice or things to watch out for in viewings?

Thanks in advance

late 150 BHP and 180HP engine remap to the same 210ish BHP.

This has been covered loads, have a dig round the maintenance section.

Main difference between 150bhp and 180bhp is the 6 speed gearbox and TT brakes (vented rear discs and biggerfront discs). The actual engines are the same though, just a different factory map. 150bhp is AUM and 180bhp is AUQ.

The 180bhp models are rare though but they both re-map to the same.

There are lower mileage examples out there but you didn't say what price it was up for?!

The 180 I looked at was up for £2795. He is selling it due to getting a mk6. Owned it for 5 years and came across very well. Cars faultless tbh with a good mop I think it would come up like new.

He had it up for £3400 but now has his new golf in his drive so needs rid of the mk4 quick. Car drove very well. Felt tight and pulled nicely

Condition & history first - Mileage is a just a number. ;)

A 180 for less than 3 grand? I'd be suspicious unless it's done astronomical miles. At that price it's far more likely to be an earlier model simply remapped to up the power.

And why not? It is possibly to come across the right car first time round!

exactly my thoughts

i test drove 3/4 MKIV's so i knew what a good one felt like before buying mine

the difference in performance between them was quite different depsite being the same engine etc

I suppose if you're new to these cars, but before I bought mine I had already driven my GT TDI 110 and another 1.8T. However I would never not think about buying a car as it's the first one I've seen.

I'm certainly careful. I just wouldn't rule out the first car I look at...

(mine was the second I looked at - but it fitted everything I wanted -dark colour/three doors/1.8T with less than 100K/Recaros)

Thirsty but normally quite high specced. Slower than a mapped 1.8t

same interior though unless the V5 was fitted with leather as standard  :undecided:

No but it seems leather in the V5 is alot more common than in the 1.8t's.

Not completely the way to go.....

R32 interior is the way to go but can go for as much as £1500.00 for a good one

One on eBay now at £700 and it's not going up yet but the last 2mins will be a different story
