Title: Stripping my white 1.8...
Post by: Rmachines on 26 May 2009, 13:49
Im going to strip my white 1.8, I love the colour of this car and hate the colour of my deisel so my plan is to take all the pannels i can off and swap everything!  The only diffrence is ones a pre 95 going into a post 95,  other than the indicators will everything fit?  I presume i just have to respray the roof and rear panels then.. ?

Yes the indicators are different but all the rest is the same, I had the same idea with mine and yes you will need to respray the roof and rear panels.

Only thing to add is that the orignal colour will still show inside the door shuts etc.

I have done well, started at 3PM and have stripped the whole car down to an empty shell, finnished by 8PM!  I now the car is stripped down i can see a fair bit would need painting but still not to bad, could leave those bits out i guess, will have to have a think about that.

It would be better to paint inside the door shuts etc.

Rear quarter panels, rear panel itself, engine bay, door shuts, sills and roof, can't think of anything else atm

My sills have side skirts so i usually coat them in a thick rust protector and put the sills back on, so thats going to be black anyway,  Obviously i would like to do more but this will be done in my garage and on the cheep so im not sure exactly what can and cant be done at the moment, i probably wont do the engine bay but deffinatly the rear pannels and probably inside the doors.

Im still a little unsure about doing it now as the pannels im going to be putting on the car have a bit of rust,  i would have to repsray  half of them to get them perfect,  but i suppose spraying white on white is better than white on dark blue

Also wont you have to inform the dvla, as your v5 document will have to change :undecided: just wondering what would need to be done to inform them that the colour has changed and what costs are involved, as im thinkin of changing the colour of my motorbike.

They don't charge, all you need to do is send the log book back to the dvla with the change of colour noted.
