Title: gearbox
Post by: molovin on 25 May 2009, 22:24
Ive recently started using the golf and not used to the gearbox. Im findin it hard to set off in 1st gear ethier have to really rev it to stop stalling or end up wheel spinning off which isnt good when im in traffic at the lights. just seems to be i cant find the biting point and theres isnt a perfect place. its a mk2 gti 1990 i belive. would a quick shift sort this problem out?

Definatly getting into first seems like i can stop it from rollign back but to get it moving forward just cant get the clutch up where it needs to be. first i thought it was just me not getting used to the gear stick as im used to a short box on a scooby and other jap cars i own. How would i go about changing the gear linkage or reapiring it.

Do you have a self-adjusting clutch cable?

Do a search on gear linkage - there's hundreds of info buried here, from eliminating 2nd gear crunch, to alignment, to short shifts.

Not a definitive test, but, stick the handrake on and lift the clutch slowly in 3rd, if it stalls, the clutch is ok.

1st step get a manual adjust cable, go to gsf and ask for a 1989 mk2 1.6 cable, that'll deffo be the one you need. cheap as chips and always #1 on the list of things to change if you suspect you have a clutch problem!
also have a read thru my linkage repair faq, that'll help you familiarise yourself with the linkage under the car and decide what if anything needs replacing on that side of things.
