Is it a good idea to change the mk1 gti air cool oil cooler to mk2 gti water cool oil coolerbecause the mk2 gti oil cooler looks nice!
-
Thats a good question, I'd like to know aswell. Anyone got any ideas???

I see absolutely no reason why you can't, my 1983 cab has the mk2 type and it all works fine 8)

I never thought of that, what a good idea. I was always thinking along the lines of buying a bigger aftermarket air to oil cooler as the mk1's oil can get a tad hot after a bit of a rag. ;D. Hey I wonder if fitting a switchable fans worth it too?

Am sure its possible, you would need to add a Mk2 spec water pump, metal water pipe and front head flange i think to make it work if i am thinking correctly. Plus am sure it will only be possible a 1.8 only as well.

I know we can use the mk2 gti water cool oil cooler to mk1 gti.My question is is it a good idea to remove the mk1 air oil cooler and use the mk2 water cool oilcooler?

Yes, the coolant heats up quicker than the oil so it will bring the oil temp up quicker (good for the engine on short runs). The air cooled oil cooler is a time bomb, the hoses and cooler will fail one day. If it looks ok then keep it, but if you are doing a engine conversion (16v,20v etc) loose the 20 year old air cooled oil cooler.
