Title: Mk3 windows !!
Post by: Vigilante on 25 May 2009, 17:54
What is it with mk3 electric windows? I looked at 2 this weekend, an 'R' reg and a 'P' reg......both had window problems. Is it a common fault with mk3's. And is the doorcard easy to get off to fiddle with the carrier, motor etc?
Also, the 'P' reg I looked at didn't have remote locking, or so the seller said......but the key was a VW item with a button in the middle. Do they all have remote locking, and is it an easy job to get it working if it's gone out of synch? My Mondeo did and it was a 2 minute job to get it working again.....

No idea on central looking, mines a N reg GTi & has central locking, so I'd imagine if they were GTi's they should have it, not neccessarily remote thoughm, depends on what alarm it's had fitted.

Window regulators are a common fault in MK3's, easy enough to fix/replace though, about £15-£30 from scrappies & 5 mins to change, door card is two screws then pops off.

Re the remote central locking; the button in the middle of the key may have been for a 'torch' built into the key.  Should be able to see a small glass 'bubble' or 'window' on the key.  Mine has the same thing, it's a '94 GL.

Remote central locking kits easy enough to get on Ebay, and relatively easy/cheap to fit.

Yeah there a nightmare the windows.... i got a p reg 5 door gti, i had a problem with the passenger side rear window, the motor was fine, at some point it had maybe jammed, and the previous owner managed to open it but had nackered the housing that the window slots into... which is only a plastic overmould with metal insert which the motor cable is connected to that moves the window up and down.... anyway I cut down a nylon block and bolted it to the housing to repair it myself, works fine and never had any other probs with it... i do have a problem with my drivers side on now and again, the button on the door doesnt always seem to work, you got to mess about with it and it eventually works. could be some crap in it maybe... just need time to check it,,, the door cards are easy enough to take off tho.. hope this helps.

Can look at another one if you like!    Know what you mean though..Up until a month or so ago i thought i was one of the few Mk3 owners on here with all electrics working..Fat chance now..Yep P reg and 2 windows have packed up!  Using the passenger side at mo and what's the bet that'll pack up as well!
Not sure what the answers are yet, only that my rear offside window dropped into the door and my drivers window has stuck closed.

I need a regulator and motor from the rear right door in my valver. Cant get any from the scrappies here and no luck on ebay, have been looking for a while. Have an add in the wanted section but no luck yet. Any ideas where I can get one reasonable? Summer is here and It would be nice to have it sorted

Christo77, You have the same problem as mine then, the cable that sits in the housing for the window has come out, probably broken some of the plastic overmould, That is what i modified with the nylon block and a bolt to fix mine :) works fan bluddy tastic :-) ohh and i also got 2 full elecy window motor complete for either side of the front driver and pass... :-) I also heard there quite expensive :-) got mine given by my mate who sold his mk3 :-)

Ah..yep sounds like it..i somehow managed to wedge it closed for the time being but did notice the mechanism would pull the window down but not bring it up at all.
Thanks for the info anyway..i'll have a look at that one first.

What if the car doesnt have central locking, are this kits still easy to install?

Christo77 - mine did exactly the same, i used cardboard rolled up to keep the window wedged closed lol... worked for awhile, until i finally got it sorted.. you could just as easy go to a scrappy and all you'll need is the housing that fits to the cable of the mechanish and that clamps the window to it. (or do what i did, nylon block and make it work) :-) to be honese, i think mines alot stronger now as the plastic overmould (over the metal insert) is an Acetal plastic and is crap, bit of a crappy design if u ask me. anyway hope u get it sorted.

Remote central locking kits easier to install if central locking already in place, as just extra module to wire in.  Plenty of advice on here re wiring, and careful use of  a circuit tester helps!

Also plenty of complete kits to convert non-central locking cars to remote central locking; would be more involved as motors/actuators need fitting to the cars, etc.

But as said, time, patience and a circuit tester work well.  Failing that, local auto-electrician shouldnt charge a fortune.

Got that thanks, well i think anyway.. difficult to visualise what you mean exactly but i'm sure once i'm looking at it your plastic block fix will become obvious ;)

Does anyone actually know of a mk3 gti that DOESN'T  have remote locking?
Also, the specs of gti's seem to differ for no apparent reason, for example ....the 'r' reg I tried had no a/c or computer, but the 'p' reg had a/c......still no computer tho. But I've seen cars (gti's) advertised with both.............what gives, did VW randomly decide to fit either/both/niether......depending on what day it was?........seems a bit strange to me.

Yeah mine doesn't have remote locking and none of them did from the factory!  Most now will have via an aftermarket alarm system.

My P reg has a computer but no A/C - I think A/C was an option but a computer should be standard, especially on later GTi's?
