Title: 8v smoke
Post by: Veedubgt18v on 11 August 2004, 22:10
i have a 92 8v pb engine gti with 110000 miles on the clock, occasionally when changing up gear a puff of black smoke comes out the exhaust.

now is this anything to worry about?

im gonna check timing and air filter but is there anything else i should look for?

im gonna do my tappets when i can afford to

on last thing when doing the timing with a strobe gun and the notch on the flywheel whre in the viewing window should it sit? and what should it do as revs increase?

thanks peeps!

there is two notches, one on the fly, and one behind it - these line up on when timed correctly - just set it when its idling

also, if its black smoke then its overfuelling

take it to somebody who knows how to set up golfs, it'll only take them all of 10mins to set it

yeah i thought black was overfulelling, i brought a guson time strobe today and i just wondered do i set it statically by getting the fly notch in the middle of the window and how many degrees btdc should my engine be (pb 8v)?

ok i found out i timed it wrong.

i timed it at idle with the blue temp plug connected, you are meant to time it at between 2000 and 2500 rpm with the temp plug disconnected. there are then 2 timing lines one on the fly and a notch in the window they need to line up. then when increaseing the revs the fly mark should look as if it going backwards towards the bulkhead. this will show that the distributor and ecu are working.

i will try this at the weekend so fingers crossed it does all that!  :)

oh yeah and i think timing should be 5 - 7 degrees btdc. anyone know if this is right?
