if i was to buy an abf powered car to use for my 90spec 8v gti would it come with everything needed for the conversion apart from the decat pipe
-
Yes, but the Golf3 is the best one to go for, as the engine loom is separate to the rest of the car loom.
It'll include everything you need, including the cable-change gearbox, which it would be sensible to fit.
-
Can you whack the full exhaust off the MK3 (mani > back) onto the MK2 ?
-
the toledos are ok donors loom wise you have to strip it out but the loom comes out easy. cordobas however good engine donors bit of a fail for the loom tho
-
cheers guys i will have to see what tomorrow brings if its good news its a toledo if its bad its still a 1.8 8v
-
i have the chance for a full seat cupra conversion. im liking it as its got the gearbox, shift tower and clutch cable conversion.
i understand the looms are not separate, and the fusebox is on the passenger side. will this be easy to overcome?
-
depends on your skills, if you can read and understand circuit diagrams, think logicaly and not afraid or wirecutters its pritty straight forward. if you get the fear when presented with the multicolured spagetti that is an unwraped loom it'll be nigh on inpossibe
-
or the other option.... pay someone to do it? to be as plug in and play as the digi3 golf loom?
-
pretty certain the fusebox is on the driver side in the cupra, unless it a left hooker./ the plugs are the same fusebox end, just have to rip the lighting loom out of it basically. the way i make these is to get the ecu plug, unwrap the loom then put asside everything that isnt plugged into it or isnt obviously for engine (i.e. oil pressure sensors, dash temp gauge etc)
tip for you, while youre unwrappin the loom, put a pit of tape every 2 foot or so, so the loom retains the shape roughly. otherwise it takes some headscratching to get it back together neatly!
once you have everything you think needs chopping seperate from main loom, confirm each wire from the fusebox faq then chop em out. Best to have a mk2 engine loom to hand so you can see exactly what bits you need to keep, or even replace the ABF bits that differ with bits from the MK2 loom. I combined a MK2 16v and ABF engine loom to make a factory MK2 ABF engine wiring loom :)

prittymuch what i do on pre 90. fettel pre 90 plugs onto the abf loom.
20vt's get the same treatment but have the ecu decoded sodon't have to bother with the clocks and crap, and an extra littel box added in to make the revcouter and other things work properly
-
hmm, this is looking way over my head
think im going to go on the hunt for an early golf abf with no immobiliser
-
well im still 8v for now but thanks guys hopefully soon i will be pestering you for more abf advice
-
fooooook it. iv bought it. box, seat cable converter, the lot  and a passat widetrack kit too
going to get on this loom asap. i think as soon as its in front of me, where the lamba goes on the loom, transponder, temp senders/alternator, battery. things will become clear.
danny, your abf synchro. i know the drivetrain saps quite abit of power, but in real term driving how is the feel of the car. how quick is it? what sort of machinery you keeping up with??

It's fooking fast - we roasted several people in it at the 'ring, who weren't expected to be left for dead by a sheddy Golf2 - at least one Impreza and I can't remember what I took out with it when I poked it round there.
I know he's been toasted by a Civic Type-R, but that was round Ross and there's not a lot of standard stuff round them there parts.
As an engine conversion I'd rate it substantially over anything else I've even done, with regards to percentage improvement over original.
-
i cant wait. its going to be a little rocket. im fed up of my old man desrtoying me in this mk5 ed30
-
Yeah, good show.
I'm heading that direction myself got my mk3 sitting at my mates gathering dust, found a good link for wiring diagrams.
Which I will post when I find it.
What's the name of the box that makes the rev counter and speedo work properly?
-
In fact it was danny_p amongst others

Speedo is driven using a Toledo or Passat speedo cable.
Rev counter needs a line taken out of the innards of the ABF coil. That DannyP knows about that sort of black magic.

the power the syncro system sapps you gain back by going round corners faster and been on the power sooner  and it happily pulls off the end of the 120 clock. power for pound it has to be the best engine to go for imo.
as TC said it was supriseing a lot of cars on the ring and pulling just the ton up the steep long climb ( soz i forget the name ) and held it own very well and actualy gained on meany cars going up there.
when i broke the propshaft tho i found it a bit frustrating to drive, would quite happily spin up toyo t1r's at every opotunity without trying
-
other option for rev counter is to bin the mk3 coil and use the mk2 one instead, this is my prefered route as the mk3 coils can be unreliable.
-
i really dont think it matters what coil you use, both systems work just fine i've never had any problems with useing mk3 coil and have plenty of spares sat around the only reall issue i think is that over time the resin case on the mk3 coil can crack. never had any proablems with the mk2 setup ether.
tho the mk3 coil pack is getting fitted to rather a lot of other other other older cars as it's a simple retrofit
-
personal preference really at the end of the day, both work just as well.
Just that you see a hell of a lot more threads in the mk3 forums with guys having broken coils than you do in the mk2 forums, and thats on cars 10 years older plus! Also since the car already has a MK2 coil no need to source a replacement.
Last of all I just dont like the idea of opening the casing to get at the rev counter feed, when there is a perfectly fine off the shelf way to do it :)
I've seen it suggested the MK3 coils fail due to heat, so perhaps suitable heat sheilding/moving to a cooler location would help extend their life?
-
rj, how do we incorporate the mk2 coil into an abf conversion?
-
not particularly difficult but you need some bits from a MK2 loom. you need the TCI-H and coil, plus the wiring in between. you also need to run the red/black and black wires from the coil to the fusebox (rev counter & ign live). plug the tci & coil in as before, then chop off the MK3 coil plug and splice the reg/green wire to pin 6 on the TCI.
Basically exactly how the MK2 8v digifant/16v TCI is wired up :)

easyest way i find is to grab an ignition loom from a carb model and modify that.
