Recon/new not much difference as all the internals should be changed, try and see if you can get an exchange for a recon, it will save you time, or take it off and give it a clean then see how it is as it sounds like it is sticking abit.

you blew a hole in your piston, cos of the coil pack?
because i just put my car on vag com found 2 dead coil packs after some investigation. went to get a couple of replacement's but the shop only had one.
Wont beable to get another one till i go work, in the morning. got to do a 8 mile journey. Do you think that it will be alright to drive (check light is flashing)

yes mate not good fuel leaked down an ignighted which blew a hole in the piston :( very costly

an you do no you cant just replace 2 dont you as if you do its like the other 2 will go so you need 2 replace all 4

ouch
ill av to get 3 tommorow then. How long did you leave it think ill make it 8 mile.
Do you know what compression you get at cranking check mine today got 75 80 psi max, i know this is low just want to now what it should really be (thats how i knackerd my coil packs)

This will be fine :

done a scan with the vag code reader and got 2 codes.

 16500 engine coolant temperature circuit - range/performance problem.

 00532 transmission control module  relay-supply  voltage   (B+) malfunction low battery or bad ground.

can anyone shed any light on this as i havnt a clue. thanks

i have erased them and will do another scan in a few days time, would any of them 2 be causing  the problem ive described on 1st page?

thanks again for your help

  16500/P0116/000278 - Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62): Implausible Signal
Possible Symptoms

    * Starting the engine when engine is warmish or warm, idle rpm immediately is 1200 - 3000 rpm.
          o Diesel: an indication is extreme long time burning time of the glow indication light.
    * With all engine temperatures seldom idle rpm will vary between 900 - 1000 rpm.
    * With engine warm (90 °C) the engine temperature suddenly drops (70 °C) and slowly comes back to 90 °C.

Possible Causes

    * Wiring and/or connections faulty
    * Engine Coolant Sensor (G62) faulty

Possible Solutions

    * Check wiring and connections
    * Replace Engine Coolant Sensor (G62)

  00532 - Supply Voltage B+
00532 - Supply Voltage B+: Signal too Low
Possible Causes

    * Wiring/Connectors from/to Control Module faulty
    * Power Supply (Battery/Generator) faulty

Possible Solutions

    * Check/Repair Wiring/Connectors from/to Control Module
    * Check Power Supply (Battery/Generator)

Special Notes

    * When found in an individual control module, it's most likely a local source (e.g. wiring/connectors).
    * When found in multiple control modules at the same time, it's most likely a common source (e.g. ground spot, battery, generator).
    * Intermittent codes are often stored during low outside temperature when the battery capacity goes down and may be ignored.
    * Common with 16946/P0562/001378 - System Voltage: Too Low stored in other control modules.

how long do you think i sould leave it/drive it for till i do another scan?

went out it it today for 5mins and did a scan when i got back and none of the above codes came up but this one did.

16502/P0118/000280 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62): Signal too High

Possible Symptoms

Difficulties with starting a cold engine.
Starting the engine when engine is warmish or warm, idle rpm immediately is 1200 - 3000 rpm.
RPM at idle is irregular.
With all engine temperatures idle rpm will often vary between 900 - 1000 rpm.
With engine warm (90 °C) the engine temperature suddenly drops (70 °C) and slowly comes back to 90 °C.
Bad acceleration during warm-up.
Diesel Engines: Glow plug indicator may be on for a longer than normal time or at ambient temperatures where it shouldn't come on at all.

Possible Causes

The electrical signal coming from G62 is too low
Wiring and/or connections faulty (short circuit?)
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62) faulty

Possible Solutions

Check wiring and connections
Check / Replace Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62)
Special Notes
In many cars between MY 1995-2002 the G2/G62 had a bad reputation for failing often. The original G2/G62 sensor is black and the improved replacements are green.

do you think its worth getting a new temp sensor?

Yes you need a new temp sender - very common fault :
