Title: compression/timming
Post by: parrotveasey81 on 24 May 2009, 11:31
1.8 8v gti just replaced my head gasket and when doing so i found out its a tsr engine with a tsr202 cam with a standard pulley, thing is when i timed it up it ran good but was flat(i also fitted a 4 branch manifold at the same time)
when the timing is set to factory i get 12bar on all 4 but is flat
when i set the cam 1 tooth forward i get 14bar on all 4 and it goes better but you can only use half throttle as it misfires on full throttle
when i set the cam 2 teeth forward i get 16bar on all 4 and it sounds a lot better but wont rev over 4500rpm
the only thing that is different to before is the manifold so would this make that much difference that i would have to have it tuned again, also i have played with the dizzy timing as i was told that it would make a difference but all that does is make it pink even worse?????

try retarding thr cam,     worth finding  out what a rsr 202 actualy is and how it should be timed.

knock it back a tooth if it runs it should be quite peacky then

I worked at Tsr for 4yrs, 202 or 203 cam is set as per standard however the dot on the back of the pulley needs to be lined up to the edge of the head and not the rocker cover.

A 202 is not that hot a profile by the way 268 / 272, a 203 is 286.

Hope this helps.

thanks,i timed it up as you said bit it is still flat,i runs fine and will rev out in gear with no misfire or pink, the temp sensor and maf are working and there is no vacuum leaks so what else could it be.

have you done the ign timing as per the digifant tuning guide?

rj no not at the mo as i have been looking for info on mfa's as mine works fine on normal mode but in secret mode it only shows this on p1 and p2
8888(just all lines that look like 8's)
123
7418
1325
3
955
i have only just got the mfa working as when i got it it did not work, when i took the lower dash off i found out that the wires were cut so all i done is join them back up(and yes i got the colours right)
if i cant get the mfa working is there any other way of doing the tuning???????

you dont have to use the MFA secret mode for tuning, just makes it a bit easier as you have a digital rev counter.  you can still use the normal rev counter ;)

sorted,i will get it tuned at the week end and see if that makes a difference

right done the tuning today and it runs a lot better(dizzy timing was a bit out)but it still flat after 3750rpm as if its not getting enough fuel and it wont go much over a ton ware as before it would go off the clock(120mph clocks)plus at a ton it use to pull realy good so these leads me to the next Question when you take the co reading do you do it with the temp sensor connected or not as the car runs better if i screw the screw on the maf all the way in.
also fitted my poly bushes today on the front(minus the inner anti roll bar ones)and its made the front end so much sharper, now the back end fills all sloppy so i will have to fit the poly rears soon.

disconnected, deffo sounds like summat aint right!  Might be worth takin rocker cover off and checkin where cams point at tds, also remove the cam sprocket and make sure woodruff key is there

right, checked the cam timming and thats fine so i had another play with the dizzy timing and tick over/co but this time by ear and seems to run alot better but still struggles after 5100rpm.would it be worth me taking it to tsr and having a power run on there rr and see what they say, would they be able to tell me whats wrong or what it needs from a power run as when ive read in fast ford when they do there dyno days the bloke who does it says a comment on how the cars running and what it could do with.thanks parrot

how do the vaccum lines to the fpy/throttle body look? check the vac line to the fpr is connected to the vac nipple on the passenger side of the tbody and the other one is blanked off.  I take it you've given it a full service?

maybe you have a fuel delivery problem, pull the plug to the main pump and turn the key 1 click, make sure the in-tank pump primes ok.
