need some help with a prob ive had a few weeks now, ive searched golfgti and clubgti but not found same prob as mine. ive got a 91 8v digi. ive got a bad vibration only when accelerating at speeds between 40, 45 ish to about 80, 85 ish but ne faster an it goes. as soon as i stop accelerating the vibration will go and it isnt there at slower speeds. really need some help with this as i go on motorway everyday for work and its driving me mad! any help would be great, cheers.

I am presuming you have done the basics .
1, tyre pressures,
2, tyres themselves ( bulges / sidewall damage )
3, wheels for damage
4, see if a balance weight has fallen off.
then into doing stuff
1, swap wheels front to back
2, get all / front wheels re balanaced ?
not sure if its true but heard wheel balancing is only effectve around the speeds your having issues with  :undecided:
-
would ne of these only make the vibration when accelerating and then stop when not accelerating?
-
when accelerating, the front end is " tight " as such, as the power is being applied,
when coasting it isnt - if that makes sense
always do the basics, and most are FREE .
also get under and see if the CV boots are intact
-
check the drive shafts as some have weights on them. Possibly flapping around?
Could even been worn driveshafts/ wheel bearing.
I'd get the front wheels in the air and check the hubs for any play. like the MOT check if you know the one?
even check the wheel bolts. you never know.
-
Bent driveshaft, loose bolts from shaft to output flange, knackered inner or outer CV joint.....?
Is the vibration just through the steering wheel or is it the whole car shaking?
-
its the whole car that shakes, its makein my dash and door cards shake like f*$k. how could i check if the cv's r knackered? i dont have ne knockin when cornerin.
-
Sounds like something in the drivetrain rather than wheel balance. You'll need to get the car off the ground and get underneath, I had this on a driver and it turned out that the spline bolts from the drive shaft to output flange had come loose and three had dropped out. Could be the inner CV, they don't necessarily knock on full lock. Could even be the main bolt that holds the driveshaft into the front hub thats come loose. & many more........ Buckled wheel or even a tyre about to blow maybe.

did your vibrations only happen when accelerating at certain speeds but stop as soon as you wernt accelerating?
-
Yes, only under power due to eccentric drive to the shaft (mind you not much power in a driver). But eccentric drive could come from quite a few sources. The vibe might even be from the engine itself shaking in its mountings. Best of luck in finding your problem.
-
also worth checking before buying new shafts (as i did)
on the inner cv joint , check if there is actually grease in there
mine was full of hard black crud , and the shaft couldn't move thus causing me the have a horrable vibration
-
have you had the tracking checked? might be worth getting that checked before replacing cv joint and drive shafts. and they might even find the fault for you if there is a fault (i did say MIGHT)

try the cheapest thing available mate, my mate had the same problem but a lot worse in the 35mph speed. got the front tyres changed and balanced and it was gone. completly shocked me because i thought it would be something a lot worse then just what it was.
plus it only cost £8 each wheel to be balanced
