Title: Rear disks
Post by: Daston on 22 May 2009, 18:38
Hi guys,

Got my rear wheel off to give it a bit of a clean (19 years worth of brake dust), I noticed the rear disk looks really thin. Now this is the first car I have worked on that is A) So old and B) Front Wheel Drive so it could be possible the disks are supose to look like this.

Disks shouldn't look rusty or scored like that - looks like your calliper isn't even working.

The thickness is a judgement call, each manufacturer has their own figure. But you can gauge it, if the lip at the edge of the disk is quite deep - its time for replacement.

Check out how worn the pads are! Remember, replacing the disks, means rear bearings too (not neccessarily new, but the shells need swapping over).

Going off the pictures, and how close the calliper is to the disc - they don't look particulary thick

hmm good point, I would say they have 5mm left on them. Going to see how bad the front ones are tomorrow and I may end up getting a full set just to be sure.

They look fine to me, the rear discs don't have much to do anyway. They just need to be used to clean them off, you could change them but you'll probably not notice any improvement at all in the braking as they're  pressure limited anyway. The front discs do nearly all the work.

for this price and what you get it's worth changing them any way, at least you know you wont have to change em agin for another 20 years lol
