Title: not firing atall??
Post by: ben harcombe on 22 May 2009, 15:35
i've just changed the leads on my mk2 abf but my 4yr old boy ran onto the drive making me drop the leads and forget the order so instead of cum straight on ere to search i guessed 2 they were wrong i turned it over and it made a pop and the pipe at the back right of the inlet an the small pipe from the isv to the cold start valve popped off so i checked the leads were right no1 at timing belt end 1342 anticlockwise on the dizzy and it pops sometime in airbox pipe above the flap it ran fine earlier just missed under load hence me changing the leads

defo got spark

yeah 1342 anticlockwise, either pop cap off and rotate engine to tdc on crank then fit #1 where rotor is pointing, or just fit them 1342, try it, if it doesnt firte move em all round 1 and try again, repeat till it fires

Check your earths.

Even if you think you've got spark, if it's dodgy you might not get any ignition.

if you have been trying to start it a few times wiith the plug leads round the wrong way remove and burn the plugs clean with blowtorch then refit them

best to whip the plugs out and let all the fuel evapourate, or spin engine on starter to blow it all out.  next turn engine to tdc and move the leads if necessary, then pop the inlet boot off and check the metering head flap, a backfire can knock the spring out of whack. you need to adjust the spring under the flap so that at rest it is level with the narrowest point of the bowl. to do this you have to unclip the top half of the airbox and adjust the spring underneath the flap
