Hello all, long time lurker, thanks for all your comments, they have been a great help in choosing my new car.
I pick up an 06 plate 3dr Black Gti on Friday, 1 owner old lady, mint condition only 7000 on the clock!!! Got for a good price as well.
18" monza's were replaced last week with white worm under warranty, though they failed to replace the centre caps which had evidence of white worm?
Now the warranty runs out on monday, so the centre caps need replacing, I notice slight condensation in the rear top brake light, the light works fine is this worth raising? also the drivers leather seat bolster has a little wear, car's only done 7K miles, is this worth raising as a warranty issue. I appreciate pictures help and I will post them after I pick the car up.
Anything else I should check worth raising with VW?
Thanks in advance guys and looking forward to finally having a reason to post on this forum!!

Post pics of the leather wear if you can......
Oh, and welcome to the club!
-
Cheers, pics will be up friday afternoon / Night, then will your guys advice Im going to my local VW armed and ready

Welcome to the forum
Condensation in the high level brake light is common in the MKV cars. VW will replace them against warranty, but beware as the warranty work means taking off the entire spoiler and this in itself has caused more concerns than the condensation with regards to alignment and poor re-fitting. One or two people have been brave enough to drill into the casing for the light and then re-seal it once the condensation has dissipated, but most people simply live with it as it is mostly cosmetic.
The leather is another known fault in the MKV's. Wear is usually found on the drivers side right bolster, but at 7k miles I would have thought it would be advisable to claim, especially as the warranty is due to expire.
HTH
-
my centre caps got replaced under warranty along with the wheels when white worm took effect.
-
Would never buy off someone old with that little miles. Clutch will be knackered and it will have had very short runs with high revs in low gears
Im presuming she isnt 'that' old though if she had a GTI?
White worm is a b!tch. I replaced my centre caps myself and cost me £10 so dont fret over it. Seat bolster sounds odd, get some pics up

If your warranty runs out monday, raise whatever issue you can, it will only bug you after if you dont.
Agree with Jules, odd the seats worn but this would indicate alot of town miles meaning geting in and out alot causing wear and tear.
I would like to know how much White Worm is needed/acceptable for a warranty claim????? as I'm geting a couple of specs on my wheels, but I have over a years warranty left and a couple of other issues like the petrol cap tag breaking up!
(Has anyone got any pics of a worn seat bolster too?????)
-
Agree with the previous posts - yes raise the warranty issues immediately and personally, I would buy a new warranty, either from VW (not cheap but you should get some dealer/manufacturer goodwill but check max claim limit - it may only be £1000 per claim) or alternatively get a quote from Warranty Direct - they have a max claim limit of £7500/year and they will cover main dealer labour rates (with an additional premium of course). I know from experience they will do a good deal at the moment and it's best to get a quote before the manufacturers warranty runs out, so do it today and haggle for their best coover/price. Be rude not to
Either way, I'd get these issues sorted asap and give the car a full service and brake fluid change. Given the low miles I'd also give it a real l...o...n...g blast to blow the cobwebs out of it.
Sounds a lovely car though and in the best colour
Enjoy,
Cass

Mate any amount is unacceptable! You have a warranty for a reason. Get the white worm sorted, it will just get worse!
-
For the love of God get the brake light seen to, it will eventually knacker the LED's (mine is an 05 plate so is one of the oldest and its fecked becuase of this) and I'm looking at a £400 bill to put it right. If possible get it reported so its on the system as a warranty repair but leave it until you have to do it.
Squeeze every last penny out of the warranty, deff get the worm seen to.
-
Its just the bolster wear that may cause disagreements!
Its down to wear and tear, and if it was an older person getting in and out - they probably struggled a little doing so. As someone said, the low miles also indicates shorter journeys, which means the driver getting in and out much more often - causing the wear.
TBH, I dont think the wear is a warranty job - its down to lack of care on the drivers part, and wear and tear is not covered by warranty.
Nevertheless, you'd get some better responses with pics etc so we can see exactly what you mean.....
-
Cheers Guys, will report back tomorrow with pics, your all a credit to a cracking forum, thumbs up

My warranty runs out at the end of this month so booked it in this week for service and MOT. I had a long hard look all over the car and the only things I could find wrong were 3 wheels with white worm and a whistling/wind noise coming from the passenger door at motorway speed.
The car was serviced and MOT'd with no problems, the 3 wheels were replaced and the door seal is being replaced next week all under warranty. I have made full use of the warranty since I've owned the car!
I've taken out an extended warranty with the Citygate group of VW dealears as that is who I use. It actually reads better than the extended warranty from VW! Also get free MOT's with their Citygate4Life thing
Forgot to add that I changed my centre caps soon after I got the car as they were scratched and white wormed. Didn't realise at the time they were warranty items. I got the replacements from eBay. I also had moisture in the high level brake light but I just moved the jet to the 2 o'clock position which stops the water soaking the light.
-
What did you use to move the jet?
Does it just twist to one side easily, with thin pliers or somet?
-

If you take off the plastic cover you can move the whole assembly with pliers or molegrips, or use a pin to move the jet.
-
^^^^ Yep!!
I managed to break the pin in the jet though so be careful. If you remove the plastic cover you can actually pull the jet out the end of the wiper spindle.
-
I certainly wouldn't give Citygate a penny for an extended warranty...

I can't fault them for servicing or repair, but the salesman wasn't interested when I was looking for a car which is why I went elsewhere.
I actually use Citygate South Ruislip where you had your problems and my Dad uses another Citygate dealership, again with no problems.
I'm sure there is good and bad for all dealerships.

I bought my old Mk 4 with 10k on the clock and the drivers bolster was worn. I tried to get it sorted under warranty but was told that it wasn't covered as it was a wear & tear item....
-
yeah mostly bad with regards to Citycrap

As promised here are the pictures, noticed some condensation in the drivers side wing mirror light, what you guys recon? Also I think the seat is not as bad as I thought.

Planning on a trip to local VW (I can claim at any VW cant I?) in the morning so appreciate your advice
o and ive gone from borrowing my brothers 1.2 clio to this, the drive home today was just ......

Shame about the leather, no idea why people by a car with leather interior if there not prepared to look after it
Can I ask how much you paid for it, i'm trying to find a mk5 GTI at the moment but the prices are a bit inconsistent.
All the other defects should get done under warranty i would imagine as something like a seal has failed and can no way be passed of as wear and tear, allthough knowing the dealers I think they'll try and wiggle out of it if possible!
Any pics' of the rest of the car

Is that rust on the wheel hub, or just brake dust?
All condenstation is warranty work, as is the white worm.
Leather is down to wear and tear unfortunately - not covered.
Not sure about the wheels - I think it may be brake dust rather then rust. Tak ethem off and give them a good clean.
-
I also have a 06 Black 3 dr GTI whose warranty runs out on monday.
In this last week I have had the following done under warranty,
2 X Monza II
4 X Center Caps
Cambelt, tensioner, Backing plate??????
Water Pump
and I think the chain on the other side of the cambelt. I assume it was this, but the person on the service desk was that specific.
I'm amazed that all this has been done with so little time left to run on the warranty, but my local dealer has really been fantastic. It must be someting to do with VW Uk paying for the work rather than the dealership.
-
Welcome :)
Echo above, BUT for the leather, have a look at some Gliptone Liquid Leather - this stuff can work MAGIC on leather. TBH, yours looks like wear and tear.
This liquid *could* sort out that issue.....
Dan :)
-
Cheers lads, im going to ask VW to sort the wing mirror light if its not too much of a job else just make a note of it on there system for the future if the light stops working. As for the rear light will ask also for them to make a note and replace if it breaks in the future.
All four wheel caps I want replacing as I have proof in documents of the alloys being replaced with corrosion under warranty.
As for the leather seat I will see what they say, else will try the liquid leather which I ordered yesterday using knowledge from somewhere on this forum but cheers anyway dano.
The car is cracking, 3 door, manual, black, leather, 18" monza's, think its the 6cd dash stereo, ipod, armrest, not sure if it has any packs (how can I check??)
Had only 7k on the clock, just needs a wash and clean inside, came with a private plate I recon is worth £500 - £1000 and paid 13k for it total, bargain really!!
Its gettin the full cleaning treatment tomorrow, Will get car pics up soon.
Thanks again...

I got this on my GTI
(http://i40.tinypic.com/2h6axr4.jpg)
mainly on the back wheels, i would also like to know what it is and if is covered under warranty as i will get mine looked at .
Also can someone please tell me what white worm is and what it effects?
-
Sure you will be told the leather is wear and tear - sad fact but true and you are unlikely to get anywhere with a warranty claim with your vehicle.
Equally with the brake hubs - no chance whatsoever - I've just bought a brand new 9 mile Touareg and they look like this. Better off taking off the wheels, rubbing them down yourself and respraying the hats. Cheap manufacturing which has been going on for years. No effect on performance but that's the way it goes in the current climate. Sh*te for sure but fact of life I'm afraid

rust on the hubs is comon.
the other week i removed each wheel, cleaned em up, and hammerited each hub. replace wheel.
it only took 2 hours to do all 4 wheels, and looks great - especially with very clean wheels.
my ED30 is 2 years old.
may be worth doing it yourself - at leat it will be done properly, and less chance of the dealer damaging something
-
Rub them down with either sand paper or wire brush-then hammerite them!, will be doing this to mine next month when I take the wheels off again.
Oh, and congrats on the purchase, enjoy!

Update for you all:
Went to local VW yesterday morning, im now on their system, booked in for next saturday to look at the 2 light condensation problems, leather seat (doubtful with that) and the centre caps, also they offered to do a full check on the car for any other warranty stuff, happy with that.
Having a chat with there sales next week about extended warranty though I may go with warranty direct or click4warranty
Gave the car a 5 hour clean yesterday, looks superb now, even though i missed a few bits, lol. Had all 4 wheels off, sanded down and hammerited the hubs, cleaned underneath and cleaned and sealed the wheels with poorboys wheel sealent (Good Stuff). Will gets pics up tomorrow to show.
Liquid leather has arrived yet so still got to do that. Fitting my black tax disc holder later when it cools down, first and cheapest mod, wonder where that will lead with the forums encouragment
Thanks again for all your advice.

pictures to show cleaned and sealed wheels with painted hubs:

Been looking at extended car warranties: quotes so far:
warrantydirect: £443 1 year Extracare (franchise dealer)
click4warranty: £467 5 star cover (network dealer) 3 years
car2cover: £572 premier plus (franchise dealer) 2 years
Warrantywise: £568 2 years £50 per hour labour rate
Thinking of going with click4warranty, £467 top level cover for 3 years, not to bad.

Looking nice!!
Is that the Hammerite Silver paint?
-
Yeah had a spray can in the garage, did the old spray into the lid then paint it on with a brush.
Just bought click4warranty just under £500 for 3 years cover.
-
How long did you leave it to dry before putting the wheel back on??
-
Looking good - nice job
Will try that myself I think.

The can I used was the hammerite High Heat resistance quick dry one. My old man bought it for his motorbike not long ago and was just enough left for me. It litterally dryed within minutes, not even tacky to touch.
I just took the wheel off wire brushed the hub down, gave the discs / calipers a wipe with a cloth, painted the hub. Whilst I gave it chance to defo be dry, I cleaned the wheel and sealed it with poorboys, which took 15 mins. then put the wheel back on.

Had it back yesterday after being in for the day, dealers were great to be fair. Heres what happen:
Centre Caps (white worm) - All replaced under warranty
Drivers Wing Mirror Indicator Light (Condensation) - Light is working so its just the case, wasnt replaced as there is a crack, i.e last owner must have clipped it, tried the "frost" got to it, no luck. :undecided:
Rear High Line Brake light (Condensation) - Told them to inspect and record it on the system to replace in the future as you guys said its a spoiler off job. They fixed it! basically carefully braking the old one out and fitting the new one! Good job.
Drivers Leather Bolster - Even though it only has 7K on the clock, they just said wear and tear :undecided:
Clutch Pedal Sticking Problem - Fixed myself
It had a health check and once over for anything else and any recalls, plus I had the auto-lock enabled as ive only got midline trip.
Summary - Well happy with the service, needs a clean (asked dealers not to) and going to treat the leather myself.
Anyone have a guide how to replace the wing mirror indicator?

Thats interesting news. I had a suspicion that it could be done this way. One day soon I'm going to have a go at this myself. Nothing ventured and all that...
-
I asked only for the rear light to be inspected and recorded on their database for the future replacement when the light broke. Though even though they are meant to replace the spoiler, the carefully break old and replace with new has done the trick, no scratches / damage to spoiler.
Just ask your dealer to do it this way.
-
I suspect my dealer is going to want to do it by the book (the expensive way). In your case they were motivated to do it the cheaper way as it was going to be less monies out of their pocket. They seemed pretty adament that it couldn't be done any other way when I went in before. :undecided:
-
In my case it was warranty work so they would prefer the cheaper way I suppose. Your other option is to just buy the part from VW and carefully remove the old one yourself.
-
^^ Thats my plan
