Title: lowering springs how low
Post by: aaron1980 on 20 May 2009, 21:58
Hi i have just ordered some lowering springs they are -60mm on the front and -55 on the rear do you think this will be ok, too low or not low enuff. i have 15" wheels i need to use the car every day but it just to high the way it is. thanks

Depends, comes down to personal preference, how many speed bumps you drive over, if you have small bumpers and 16v spoiler or big bumpers and a vr splitter etc.

Had my old golf lowered on -60mm but after settling was more like -70mm on 14in wheels. Was on standard dampers and was pretty good.
Most people on here will tell you get a matched kit springs and shocks, but I found a spring kit sufficient to get it lowered whilst I saved for a better kit.

But like I say personal pref, should be low enough in interim. -40mm is optimum for handling, anything else is style over substance....

Yeah man, it'll be fine.

I'd go back to skinny bumpers and fit a 16v spoiler.

Those pattern bumpers never fit right without a fair bit of fettling IMO .

Just make sure you have decent tyres to compensate a bit for the lack of suspension travel.

And always worth remembering VW splitters/spoilers are nigh indestructable.

the back bumper seems ok but the front is crap to be hounest yhe wheel arches are too short to reach the bottom. the tyres are 185,55,15" but i do have a set of 195,50,15" off of the old wheels do you think they will be better?

yeah man, looks miles better

Just be sure you have decent rubber on them, always buy the best you can afford as they're the only thing in contact with the road. No sense in spending on suspension to negate it by cheaping out on the tyres

Also suggest some lowered top mounts to bring th enose down a touch?

Blurb says it all, basically as soon as you uprate one part of your car it starts to effect another part. Hence why people turn into serial modders
