Had a few issues getting it started when I went to pick it up last night with my mate Mark so no pictures in daylight yet.

Pulls like a fricking train and pee's all over the corrado despite having less power. Drive back was bit scary in the rain on water logged roads with cut slicks!

Anyway here's some pics.

And a funny shot of a snail and a northloop.co.uk sticker. Made me and Mark chuckel anyway.

Swapped over the grill for an early 7 slat one. Also I've never been to the ring even if the car has so removed the northloop.co.uk sticker as well as Alex's name from the windows.

What a difference a day makes!

Rear lights swapped for standard items and small bumpers fitted. Going to need the wing brackets front and rear for the bumpers. Also need a replacement front valance as it's been hacked about to fit the spots on the big bumpers and a front splitter. Not to mention a quick blow over with rattle can after a quick sand to get rid of the surface rust.

Looks much less chav and more retro. Result!

More progress and pics this evening.

Picked up some new indicators from GSF for the grand total of £8. Fund some chav tape I used n the Passat when I fancied red stripes so used that on these non GTI bumpers and then cracked out the boiled linseed oil on all the plastics.

Looks much better I think you'll agree.

And Mew has dug up an interesting article on Matey Matey about the car. That'll explain the slight outline of matey matey stickers in the side window then!

It's been a very productive day today.

Repainted the rear valance and drivers door bottom, fitted the front splitter and added the pinstripes down the rubbing strips. Also fitted some GTI badges front and rear earlier in the week.

Paint finish and match aren't 100% but it's not a show car and I just wanted it to look tidier and more original, not mint. Just need to pick up a front valance and the plastic above it and job's a gooden.

THis weekend I fitted the freshly painted front valance and refitted the front splitter. On friday night I picked up the wheels from Swaffgti for normal road use and extreme wet trackday use when the R888's won't cut it. Cleaned them up and boshed them on.

I really like them and think they suit the motorsport look of the car. I was toying with painting them Kawasaki Green but now there on I think a bright white is the way forward.

Some pics taken today.

Just ordered myself an OMP "Fast".

£68 delivered from the official UK supplier of OMP parts. Not bad!

Also think I've sorted a pair of Cobra buckets on MKII subframes for £40. They're not the greatest buckets in the world but they're better and more supportive than the Rado seats.

Well first track day done and dusted. The day was to be frank perfect. Started off soaking wet and chucking it down which meant we spent most of the morning exploring the car's and our own abilities in a slow and sliding manner. After lunch both me and my Dad went out with the instructor which was a real eye opener. After that the sun came out and the track gradually dried. With the knowledge from the instructor and the drying track we were both getting much quicker by the end of the day.

I'm now officially a Track Day addict and I'm already saving for my next fix! THe car was faultless all day and inspired confidence. It's the best £500 car I have ever bought, in fact it's probably the best £500 I have ever spent.

My Dad got some pics from the official photographers, given a couple of them a quick edit in photoshop and here they are for your pleasure.

Right so after relaxing from friday and having a clear head I have a list of things I would like to do to improve myself and the car.

* Foot rest for my clutch foot
* Get the camber set up for -1.5 deg on the front
* Some better shoes (Actual shoes not tyres!).
* Bigger steering wheel, the 280mm Momo is just too small.
* Get rid of more weight from inside the car.
* Fix the heaters so it blows more air on the screen.

Overall I was massively pleased with how the car behaved all day, it was a joy to drive and never felt like it was not enjoying the abuse. My dad kept saying "This is such a great little car" inbetween his manic grins and chuckling. The brakes were stong and fadeless all day and I was surprised how well the Yokos held up once the track had dried out. Will certainly be cracking out the R888's on the 25th weather permitting.

Bit of an update.

Not been on any trackdays since the last post but I have one booked for 1st Sept at Silverstone on the South Circuit. Since the last update the car ran out of MOT so I put it in for one and it failed on a leaking front shock, non functioning handbrake on one rear caliper and skyward pointing headlight.

As it's running Koni top adjustables the cost of a new pair of fronts was coming in at around £400 delivered which was a little frightening. Luckily I found a full set of 4 18 month old MKIII ones on ebay and managed to get them for £185 delivered. Mark (Veedubgti16v) also kindly donated a fully functioning rear caliper, cheers mate.

So with all that fitted it was put back in today and it passed.

Cost to date
Car - £500
Tax - £110
Grill + Lamps - £10
Small bumpers - £20
OE rear lamps - £10
New Orange front Indicators - £8
GTi badges - £10
Front splitter - £15
Paint - £20
Wet/Road wheels+tyres - £75
Replacement front Koni top adjustables (and spare rears) - £185
Two G60 Top Mounts - £22
Total - £975

Update time.

Fixed an oil leak from the Oil Filter mounting where it meets the block and at the same time knocked my effing timing out. Mark helped me get it right again though and have since completed another track day this time at silverstone. No photos I'm afraid but had a wicked time. It was a killer on fuel and tyres though.

All together.

Both rears look like this, not bad just loads of lose rubber picked up on the in lap.

Drivers front, a bit worn but still plenty of life left in it.

Passenger front, oh dear.

I need to get myself one new R888 for the NSF and also a full set of wets as the current ones are starting to get very close to the legal limit so no good if I actually have to use them on a trackday and to get home!

Not sure if I'll be doing any more days this year, maybe Brands sometime before Christmas. If no Brands action then it'll be the season opener at Goodwood in March.

Got plenty of plans for the winter to improve the car ahead on 2010 and will keep the updates coming.

Cost carried over - £975
Gasket for Oil Filter Bracket - £1
Oil - £20
Oil Filter - £5
Total - £1001

Update time!

Firstly I've picked up a Corbeau Forza Sport 2000 Bucket seat in brand new condition in yellow for a bargain.

A mate also sorted me out with an old GTI drivers seat which I can now butcher and with Mark's help fab up a subframe for it. I'm going this route as it needs to be able to slide due to both me and my Dad driving the car and he's shorter than me!

Secondly when this car was built back in the day it had the VSAM Pro engine management fitted to it which in a nut shell is an ECU that controls the timing and also controls and extra (Digifant style) injector which is mounted in the metering head. This allows you to fine tune the K-Jet system for engines in a higher state of tune.

This is all good stuff except VSAM Pro is very much an antique in the aftermarket ECU world and as it pretty much pre dates the internet information is scant to say the least. However after much searching I found a chap in Oz who used to live here and ran it on a KR powered Corrado. This guy is a legend, he's managed to find a copy of the software for mapping it and is sorting me with a wiring diagram to make up the cable. I just need to pick up a cheap old lappy that has a serial port and Windows 95 or 98 and I'm away!

Lastly I have got myself a TIM Oil Pressure Gauge (Capilary type which I trust more) and a DIN slot 3 gauge holder which hopefully I'll be fitting on friday. The other two gauges are likely to be an Ammeter and an Oil Temp guage but these will be added later.

Cost carried over - £1,001
4 x Toyo T1R's fitted and balanced - £150
Bucket Seat - £65
Oil Pressure gauge and DIN pod - £Free (birthday present)
Old GTI Seat - £Free (thanks James!)
Total - £1,216

Thanks to Mark the CV joint has also been replaced but no pics of that.

I have also been on a further shopping spree and have purchased an Oil Cooler off Diamond Hell and some Polycarb windows. I'm getting the 2 1/4 light parts and the NS window from JonLeeper as he bought a set but has a late spec car so they're not needed. I've today ordered the OSF window with a slider and the two rear side windows from a chap on ClubGTI. Keeping the rear screen glass as I like having a demister.

Update time for this thread with no chat!

Recently fitted has been a rear strutbrace, poly carb windows of which there are no real pics. Next up it went to Springfest.

Next up purchased a MKI GTI oil cooler setup off Diamond Hell.

Oil cooler collected from Mr Hell at the side of the M3. It's the MKI GTI style which has a different filter housing with an inbuilt thermostat and two take offs for the air/oil cooler. Spent yesterday afternoon doing some research on whether to run with or without the stat and figuring out how to get it all to fit. Today I've cracked on and so far got the oil cooler itself physically mounted in the car by fabricating a bracket for the slam panel and hacking out the lower part of the slam panel.

So 18 months to two years ago the Golf in the hands of Alex the last owner had a loss of oil pressure and needed the bottom end rebuilding. The culprit:

I've been suffering less than perfect pressure myself so today I pulled the pump out.

Look familiar? Seems to be paint and sealant on both occasions!

Oil pressure is now a healthy 20psi (1.37 bar)at idle @ 80deg Oil temp, hurrah!

Not the hardest job in the world but not helped by a paper gasket having been used last time the sump was refitted. It was a right pig to clean it all up.

I'll be cleaning up the old pump and adding it to my increasingly large box of spare parts. I spoke to Alex earlier and he confirmed it had had a new pump when the lump was rebuilt last time.

Took it for a run and pressures are much more respectable. Chuffed.

Cost carried over - £1,547
Oil Pump - £34
Oil Filter - £6
Oil - £26
Total - £1,603

I need to update this with a few more purchases but for now on with the main event.

Yesterday I did another of the excellent trackdays organised by Richard for the 928 boys down at Castle Combe. It was an interesting day with 5 or 6 red flagged sessions that meant less time on track that I would have liked. THe car however was superb and I came away from the the day with some useful knowledge. Firstly I now know what to do with my tyre pressures on the semi slicks, secondly I need uprated ARB's and thirdly I need to get back to Combe asap. I had such a ball.

Some more pics from yesterday thanks to Mrs Horney:

Been a while since I updated this.

I’ve done another trackday which was frankly a disaster. The plastic baffle on the pil pick up pipe decided to take a vacation around my bottom end on the 2nd session of the day. The result being a sudden loss of oil pressure due to all the mashed up plastic clogging up the gauze on the pick up pipe. Let it coole down, quit for the day and nursed it home very carefully! Of course I didn’t realise the cause at the time, just had no oil pressure but none leaking out anywhere. I only found the cause when I pulled the sump the following weekend. Decided to fit a proper baffled sump and a MKIII GTD windage tray to stop this happening again.

After that disappointment I thought my track action for the year was over until a friend recommended entering an Autosolo which I duly did last weekend and it was truly brilliant. I was rubbish and finished 14th out of 17 in class but had a blast. By the end of the day I was much improved and looking forward to doing a few more and getting better results.

Course 4 run 2 with a bit of a mistake.

So in the last 18 months since I updated this thread the sum total of nothing has happened on this car. Well that's not entirely true. I drove it to one VW meet and then the MOT ran out and I put it in a friend's council garage. I lost my job 12 months ago and although i found another one I took a considerable paycut that meant this project had to be shelved for the foreseeable future.

2012 and things have changed. Having sold my TDI Polo daily and bought the MX5 for a more enjoyable daily I have just been having fun with that but a new year and a new job with a decent wage and a car allowance mean that project BTCC rep is being revived and then some. I'm not selling the MX5 though as it's too much fun. This means I'll have 3 cars. Is that being greedy? lol.

I'm currently arranging purchase of an OMP cage and in the next few weeks the Golf will be dragged out of the council garage and taken up to my friend's workshop where things will start to progress.

As a reminder I want to go from:

to:

One of the main stumbling blocks at the moment is the wheels. Seems the 15" Ronal R8's in 4x100 fitment are like rocking horse poop.

Stay tuned!

So today the project to turn it into the rep of James Shead's car started in earnest.

Open the garage to find it still there to much relief as it hadn't been checked on since I put it in there months ago and it's in quite a rough area.

Pushed it out and found it had enough juice left in the battery to unlock etc but not enough to fire up:

After a quick jump off the MX5 it fired up and sounded OK, me and marcus then decided to rag it round the yard. Fun times.

Left it running and I went off to get some antifreeze to top it up and came back to find it had run out of petrol. Doh! Off out again for a jerry can of fuel (and a McDs).

Parked it up in it's new home and began stripping the front end down so we can start on the welding. Chassis leg is first on the list.

F*ck me it was cold today.

Anyhoo finished stripping the front down and dropped the front cross member off:

N/S chassis leg was bit more rotten than I thought!

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7061/6857565775_10136c2e68_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/6857565775/)
IMAG0089#1.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/6857565775/) by Nicholas R Horne (http://www.flickr.com/people/nickhorne/), on Flickr

Cut off the rotten bit and here it is next to the replacement bit from Mark's old car:

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7176/6857567537_24b3b9af71_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/6857567537/)
IMAG0091.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/6857567537/) by Nicholas R Horne (http://www.flickr.com/people/nickhorne/), on Flickr

Didn't get any more pics but the new piece is now cut down to the same shape as the removed piece. Just needs some more fettling and some more trimmed off the car for a snug fit. Also need to clean it all up and shoot some under seal and rust killer over it all.

Popped round to another unit and picked up a black bootlid which is less rusty than mine for £20. Win!

Might get back up for an hour or two tomorrow if Marcus is about.

Turns out it's a bit rotten behind the plastic arch but not beyond repair.

Worse than I thought but savable so the doors will be coming off next weekend so I can chop out the grot and Marcus can weld in some fresh metal when he has some spare time (of which he has little!).

All tidied up until next weekend:

Another day, another load of pics:

Chopped out the rotten bit of scuttle panel:

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7052/6932158229_c8522d671d_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/6932158229/)

Drivers side rear window surround also has a bit of grot:

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7202/6786044208_54909a4ef6_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/6786044208/)

IMAG0131.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/6932160999/) by Nicholas R Horne (http://www.flickr.com/people/nickhorne/), on Flickr

Then started wire wheeling the back panel to see what was lurking under the paint and filler from when it has been replaced in the past:

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7192/6932161899_c3223c2438_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/6932161899/)

IMAG0141.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/6786050630/) by Nicholas R Horne (http://www.flickr.com/people/nickhorne/), on Flickr

Also attacked the inner rear wheel arch with the wire wheel and rust inspecting hammer. Another hole to weld up!

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7190/6786046458_7983eeb088_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/6786046458/)

As can be see there is quite a bit of rust up in the roof, need to tackle that once the cage mounts are all fab'd up and prep for the paint begins. Tomorrow need to cut out all the seat rails and tidy up all the other stuff I trimmed out today.

Also hacked the one of the seat rails but didn't get any pics of that.

Finally I removed the back box (Which took an hour, it was proper stuck on!). I'll be cutting the tail pipe off and welding on something a little more in keeping with the car.

First job was to get the mounting plates supplied with cage 'adjusted' to fit the car. These are the rear pair that sit behind where the seats will go:

It was decided that the floor of the golf was a bit flimsy and some extra load spreading can never be a bad thing right? Plates added to the floor where the rear platforms will be welded:

It was at this point we had a small fire. I thought the fuel lines ran down the middle of the car, they don't, the melted, we needed a fire extinguisher.

Here's Darren modelling said fire extinguisher. He's quite big and it's quite small.

Houstan we have a problem, it's just a little too tight at the top:

Today we'll take a few mm off the platforms to bring the cage down and then it should fit nice and snug. Then it's on the rear wheel arch mounting and the front leg mounting.

Picked up the keys and blipper for the entrance gate for my council garage this morning and thought it would be rude nto to swing by and get a couple of snaps before heading to work. THis is where the Golf will be living once it's finished.

Easter Sunday, what better day to tinker with cars. Today mission to get the doors in a better state.

Just won a set of 15" E30 BBSs shod with 4 good R888s for £132. Wanted a set of these wheel and was willing to pay £125 so with a set of R88 I call that a result!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130679870711?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Figured I wasn't going to be able to get a set of the Ronals anytime soon or for anything I could afford so going to spray these gold with a polished lip and will look suitably 80s motorsport for the time being.

Been very slack on the updates recently.

Progress has been a tad slow due to me being on holiday and also after arrival of the MSA Yearbook it was clear to be sure of passing scrutineering that the cage would have to be fitted with different plates so I had to cut them all out and start again.

Due to the above and some scheduling issues at Marcus's workshop it won't be being painted this coming week as was the plan. Hopefully however I can get the shell prep done and it can go in a week later than planned.

Anyhoo have some pics:

Just needs a skim of filler and some tidying up to finish it off.

The boot lid I got was indeed much less rusty than y old one. All now stripped down, lightened and de-rusted ready for paint:

Been a awhile since I updated this!

Cage is pretty much in and just needs some slight adjustment.

It's booked in for paint in the 1st week of november and I have the week off to help. Before then I need to finish the cage fitment, fab up the seat mounts and weld those in and finish the sunroof patch.

I've ordered a polycarb rear screen and a new on for the passenger side to match the drivers side one. Just need to pick up a new windscreen before November so I can make it water tight after the paint has been applied.

Then I just have to bolt it all back together and put it in for an MOT.

Fibreglass roof collected yesterday from LWS Designs. A top couple of chaps making very good products. The roof is work of fibreglass art and not your usual ton of matting with gaps you could drive a bus through etc.

Anyhoo, here it is placed on the car un-trimmed:

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8190/8353272721_be556977e4_c.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/8353272721/)
IMG_0200.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/8353272721/) by Nicholas R Horne (http://www.flickr.com/people/nickhorne/), on Flickr

It's a bout 1.5mm thick as can be seen here:

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8324/8354336942_fc39a0d072_c.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/8354336942/)
IMG_0202.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/8354336942/) by Nicholas R Horne (http://www.flickr.com/people/nickhorne/), on Flickr

The underside shows how it's made from a big sheet of glassfibre weave so even the inside has a nice uniform finish to it:

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8463/8354338332_c4cf77e4d0_c.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/8354338332/)
IMG_0203.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/8354338332/) by Nicholas R Horne (http://www.flickr.com/people/nickhorne/), on Flickr

The back end (it needed pulling back a bit, it does actually fit perfectly) and the quality of the gel coat finish:

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8375/8354339624_d957123300_c.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/8354339624/)
IMG_0205.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/8354339624/) by Nicholas R Horne (http://www.flickr.com/people/nickhorne/), on Flickr

Got trimming and tried a short section of the gutter trim back on to make sure it would fit without me having to take mor eof the roof back. It does fit. Result:

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8051/8354341370_a054c35293_c.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/8354341370/)

Front corner (Trim not actually put in properly, just draped):

IMG_0210.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/8353280515/) by Nicholas R Horne (http://www.flickr.com/people/nickhorne/), on Flickr

All trimmed up and ready to be bonded on:

I just need to prep the shell and buy the sealant and we're good to go!
