ok might sound like a daft question but here goes,....the ratio between gear changes dosnt seem much different on my 92 8valve especialy 2nd to 3rd is this right. is there anyway of identifying the gearbox (numbers stamped etc ) to check its got the original box in and not had a change from say a 1.6 model.
this is my first digi ive owned so i cant tell if its right or not i did have a 1990 cab some years back with a dx engine code and im sure the ratios on that were different

I can't tell you much about the markings, I can't remember!
But, if you post the revs when your car is at different speeds, I'll check it with my own for you ;)

ok cheers ben i will try and suss them out and post them up

get underneath, there is a big flat area on bottom of bell housing, thats where the gearbox code and manif dates are.

ok thanks johnny i will do that if it ever stops raining.
this is speed of each gear at 2000 rpm 1st 5mph, 2nd 20mph, 3rd 25mph,4th 35mph, 5th 45 mph does that seem about right

sounds like a AUG code GTI box to me, which is correct for a later 8v GTI. earlier ones had ACD, which is the same ratio wise except 2nd is shorter :)
