Hi guys,
Am in Oxford at uni with my mk2 golf 8v gti and since changing the clutch a few weeks a go I've not been able to get 5th gear at all. Just wondering if anyone can recommend somewhere that's close enough to the Jericho side of oxford, or if anyone fancies earning a quick buck to do this job?
Really could do with getting this done by wednesday if possible as I've got to drive back home for 2 days and don't fancy doing it with only 4 gears!
Nice one

i live about 2 mins from jericho, only garage i could reccomend would be quarry motors in Quarry..
-
Lightning fast reply there mate!
I just tried Autotechnic down by the long stay car park, with no joy. I guess the problem is, I know its only a very quick job in comparison to changing the clutch and Don't want to get charged an hours labour for the convenience.
I don't suppose you have a number for that garage? Having problems finding it online

Try PM'ing Mew on here. He's at Oxford and knows his MKII's inside out. He might be ablet o give you a hand or know someone who can.

Just spent 5 minutes trying to work out how to PM someone, before realising that I have to make 10 posts before I am able to do so, shall just have to hope this thread gets his attention
Thanks

It's most probably just the little shift rod for 5th that has cracked on the end.
The shorter rod in the pic:

Might be worth calling express factors or headington autoparts to see if they can get one. For the sake of a fiver it's probably worth it.
That said, I'll have a look in the shed later as there may be a spare. Will let you know later this evening, got to revise for an exam on Wednesday!
Edit: thinking about it, if the clutch has been done then check the rod is correctly fitted and that the tabs have snapped shut

Aha, saved me bumping some innocent peoples for sales threads :nerd:
That makes sense about it being the shorter rod. If you have a chance to check the shed for a spare that would be awesome. Will more than happily pay in beer tokens or cash :)
Are you at Oxford or Brookes? I've just finished my exams on saturday :)

GSF sell that short white piece for 90 pence i think. Give them a call..
-
Yup, just checked it and the white plastic rod is cracked at the end closest to the rear of the car, I should have really noticed that :embarassed:
-
When you replace it don't forget to do the clips on either end. I did and broke the new one in 3 days!

If i do have one there's no guarantee it's any better than yours though! Now you know it's definitely that, give Headington Autoparts (got number saved on phone 01865 750111) or Express Factors a call, they're normally pretty helpful and the cheapest i've found around Oxford. If you can find it for a couple of quid then i'd do that tbh.
If i do find one and it's good you can have it, it's not exactly valuable
Oh and i'm at Brookes, unfortunately!
-
Nice one, Thanks for the info.
Don't suppose you're doing a motorsport course at brookes by any chance?
Phoned around a few of the motor factors with no joy, so I've ordered one from GSF that should be here tommorow. Although the rod is cracked it still seems to be holding its place, so fingers crossed it solves my issues :)
-
Ooops, guess what i've just found in the shed. :lipsrsealed:
Too late to cancel the order?
-
Awesome, job done.
In theory this should be my 10th post which should let me communicate via Pm :)

Well thanks to Ben I can now get into 5th gear, it's not very easy so I think I'll adjust the gear linkage when I get home to Cambridge.
Nice one :) Excellent forum you guys have got here

Good good :afro:

I have a problem with 5th also, all my gears were nice and smooth before it went in to have a new down pipe fitted, now its awkward and sometimes takes a few goes to get in... I should have taken it back at the time, but i've kinda left it too long now.
I havent even looked at it yet, but just read this thread and thought i'd mention it, I would assume they moved something or even broke this part while doing the downpipe. does that sound likely ?
Thanks

It's possible, due to the nature of the engine and gearbox layout, it's so easy to just have a quick look to see if that rod is knackered.
And considering it's only 90p for a new one, and it only takes about 15 seconds, it's nice quick fix :)Well thanks to Ben I can now get into 5th gear, it's not very easy so I think I'll adjust the gear linkage when I get home to Cambridge.

Nawt wrong with Oxford Brookes students - seen many a hottie walking around Oxford with an Oxford Brookes jumper/hoodie on...
Also there's top blokes like Mew and Chris enrolled there too :afro:

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I'm having the same problem with 5th gear and would like to check the aforementioned plastic linkage but need pointing in the right direction as to where abouts I can find it. If someone had a picture I would really appreciate it.
Many thanks.
