Title: Fluttering noise
Post by: Perryd84 on 18 May 2009, 12:17
I'm new here so pardon my ignorance

I got a golf mk4 1.8 t nearly a year ago now and always had a fluttering noise from the dump valve when changing gear. I thought this was normal but was told its boost surging and can damage the turbo!!!

Was told a new dump valve would sort this out as the crappy standard bosch one don't last to long and can fail. So I was gonna fit a forge split-r anyway so went ahead and bought one and fitted it, but still getting the flutter and need help?!?!

Either I've been misinformed or something's up???   :undecided:

The split Rs can cause problems on some of the 1.8T engines your best off with the Forge 007p thats what most people on here use.

yeah I was in 2 minds if to get the split r or the 007p but went with the split r because wanted a blow off sound.

But even with the new valve on now I shouldn't get the fluttering should I??

Might have to purchase a 007p see if that sorts it out

Apparently if you contact Forge and say you have been having problems with the Split R and poor running they will exchange it for the 007p. If you want the tssssh sound fit an induction kit with the 007p.

my bosch one used to make this noise too, i quite liked the noise tbh, i thought it sounded cool..lol
i have now changed to an R-spec one, not the most expensive but does the same job as the more expensive ones..

lol i quite like the noise to but if it's not spose to then it's gotta go!
So did it stop fluttering with the r-spec one then?

I'll get in touch with forge see what they say and get this sorted out.

Next stop induction kit slowly getting there...................!!!

means you need to replace the recirc valve, it happened to mine, luckily my brother had his one from his s3 sitting in his garage (he uprated his to the forge) you shouldnt really drive it like this, as the turbo is stalling?? i felt the difference instantly power wise, the second it went, i thought i was driving a 1.1 golf haha

oh dear , so there should be no noise when you change gear? how would i go about checking this out?

do you mean something like this?

you will still hear like a faint hissing noise whatever happens, the valve is releasing pressurised air into a part of the system thats not pressurised so will make a little hiss, just not as loud as a valve that lets the pressure straight out into the air. therefore it kind of makes sense why an enclosed DV like the ones we are using are quieter.

real easy to fit! should be a fiting guide somewhere id imagine, if its chattering it means air is getting forced back into the blades of the turbo, sounds cool but can kil the turbo!

thanks, i've ordered the valve so it should be here tomorrow- we'll see if the noise disappears once fitted. does it come with crimps etc or do i have to go purchase them?

cheers

Problem solved!

Mechanic mate of mine had fitted my forge split-r the wrong way so I flipped it to right position and get a nice whoosh sound now when I change gear  no more fluttering!!

So in answer to my own question and few others there should be no flutter!! :nerd:

Just thought I'd also add, fitted the forge dv on the weekend, no flutter and for some reason fuel consumption has decreased- marvellous!
