Thats the engine breather, and yes in theory it could affect performance.
I'm not sure how much they are at a main dealer. You could also search ebay for anyone else that is breaking a vr6.

Airflow readings are calculated by the ecu with the breather working.

?

The ecu relies on the airflow meter amongst other things to calculate the fuel/air mixture, the crankcase ventilation is further downstream, so if it is not functioning correctly then the ecu will not calculate it correctly, as the extra burnt gasses are taken into account.
This can cause problems, such as the throttle response feeling a bit flat.
I had a problem similar on my A8 a few months back. The main engine breather had collapsed, i couldn't believe the improvement when i replaced the hose.

Yes.
I would recommend removing the throttle body completely, then using a carb cleaner on it.
After all, whats the point of cleaning one side of it?
Don't forget, you will need a new gasket for the throttle body to inlet manifold.

no real grunt needs reving to get it to go just gave it a full service the car has full service history and is on 160k miles no smoke or chain rattle just quite slow my other vr6 golf was a rocket but only had 100k miles

It would be a good idea to get it on VAG-com.

Yes it is, plus coolant pipes if obd2.

Iknow theres a guy on ebay who sells em for £34 but if you want one from the stealers then go to ford!!!

That big ford that shares the vr6 engine.....thats it a galaxy....they sell em at half the price of vw stealers.
