there seems to be a big twanging noise coming from the front passenger side strut on my car, i noticed it today when i went over a speed bump and it didnt sound healthy at all... then did it again this afternoon...
still seems to drive fine, cant work it out...
-

arb or bushes most likely
-
check the shock by pushing on the corner off the car see if there is any bounce, could also be a snapped spring have a look at the coils
-
Broken spring
-
yup sounds like the suspect spriiiiiiiiiiiiiiing
-
does this mean i have an excuse to lower it a little?..
how much do you reckon i could lower it without the mrs noticing?.
-
60mm lmao
-
For what it would cost to buy one spring from VW you may aswell buy Eibach springs :afro:
-
i just had the exact same thing on monday, Priced up a standard front spring, £40 +vat. Or a full Set of jamex 35mm lowering springs £60 delivered. so its now 35mm lower!

do you have any trouble with speed bumps or anything?
when i put a jamex kit on my mk3 i was scrapping on speed bumps and all sorts.. (stated it was a 40mm kit but was hell of alot lower) i just want something to look neat and drive comfortable really..
-
no, no problems at all. theres a pic with them fitted here http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=116750.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=116750.0)

You wont have no problems with speed bumps with a 35mm drop  unless you got monster ones around your way
-
well, you know them big square red ones that all cars hate, well, theres loads leading each direction away from my house, so i have no choice to go over them. my mk3 had a job to manipulate them.. but that was slammed..
also when i bought the kit they said it was only 40mm, to late when i fitted it as i had to destroy the old stuff to get them off.
-
I roadtested the car over speed bumps after I fitted them and they were fine
-
Your be fine, mines lowered about 45-50mm and I have no problems going over any bumps
-
 the missus will be happy then... i`ll wait till the mk3 is sold then i`ll buy some..
-
Its not really a good idea to use the car until fixed as mine had gone at the top of the spring and the spring was resting on the housing in the wheel arch.
-
the turret you mean?. oh, dear... still not 100% sure its snapped yet.. was reading somewhere that it could be the top mount bearings as its only happeining at low speeds.
i will have a closer look today..
-
yeah the turret, also someone else on here said the spring went through the side of their tyre!
-
does it happen when turning in one direction??
my passenger side spring snapped and it would only twang when turning right (if i remember rightly) - driving in a straight line and turning gently it wouldn't make a noise and the ride didn't feel any different
as a temp measure GSF sell springs for £27 or so - cheap enough to get you back on the road until you buy some new lowering springs
-
i have already paid for the springs now, they should be here in a day or two.
im not convinced its the springs but still i could take your words for it..lol
as you said, ride doesnt feel any different and i havent noticed when it twangs...
-
oh dear, it was indeed the springs..both of the front, i cant believe this is a common thing..
only had the car a week and the sh!t starts..
oh well, at least my new springs are on their way.

mine had rusted right through at the very top and when i had my Eibachs' fitted the other springs were going the same way! the drivers' side front was very close to snapping!

bet you would getting to mine. we have a " table top " one on unit :lipsrsealed:
-
i got this fixed today, found out both front springs had snapped, i know one had been snapped for some time but the other had gone the other day as i was driving, it made an almighty ping .
never mind though, got it lowered 35mm so it looks alot nicer i must get some decent dampers sometime to sort out the handling though as its a bit soggy...
can anyone here open me up a project thread?..
-
Pm JV
-
