right had my golf 1.6 for 3months now and a few days ago i noticed an oil leak where i park my car, i checked the oil levels and they are fine. then the following day i noticed a odd whinning noise when i accelerate then on top of that yesterday driving home on the motorway driving at 65-70mph it slipped out of 5th gear a number of times and i had to hold it into gear. also this morning had to hold it into 5th gear again. its only on the 5th gear. all other gears are fine.
This mean im in need of new gearbox?
cheers

The chocolate gear box of the 1.4's and 1.6's strike again?
-
so what do you think people?
-
anyone????
-
knackered gearbox as Tim said
-
cheers

Sounds like the differential bearings have knackered, leaking oil out. You can actually get the box reconditioned to a very good standard for about the same price I've seen some 'supposedly reconditioned' boxes offered for.
-
yep sounds like the differential has gone from 4th to fith so you may need to get that sorted or prob cheaper jus to get a second hand box

'Differential has gone from 4th to fith'?
You only get one differential per pair of wheels that drive the vehicle. The bearings on the differential have are likely to have worn.
Yes it's cheaper to get a second hand box, but you get what you pay for and what do you actually want? Your box could have been second hand if you sold it to someone, and look what's happened to it.
Get a recon at the very least.

possibly that the 5th gear cog has broken/chipped its teeth as said i would look for a recon box rather than repair sooner or later if the teeth from the gear are floating around in the gear oil it wont do the rest of the gearbox any good if debris get around the lay shaft and main shaft and syncros
-
It'll jump out of 5th gear due to the 5th gear running hot as the gearbox oil is low and the 5th gear being at the top. With a box refurbishment, worn gears ect are of course taken care of.
-
cheers for the advice guys. im going for a recon box. just got to find one asap!
-
What a pain hope you get it sorted soon mate and dont cost you to much.
-
not gonna drive it now till its sorted. started slipping out of 3rd gear now.
anyone know where i can get hold of a recon box??
-
so anyone know of any good websites to get a recon gearbox????
-
Keep topping the box up with oil until you can afford it, if absolutley necessary. It's only jumping out of gear as the gears are overheating as there's no oil on them.
