If it was not started then no damage, now it has been started you may be lucky or could be expensive including the cat failing.

Diesel in petrol is fine, just drain the tank and fill it back up with unleaded. The only thing it could of knackered is the CAT.

I would have thought the whole fuel system would be at risk, pump, rail, injectors.

I made a fatal error when I was in Germany a few years back during the World Cup. I filled up half the tank with the black nozzle - when some woman starts waving and shouting something in German, so I stop filling, thinking we had to pay first, my dad, in a rush, pushes me out the way and keeps filling to the top.

Granted, his car was a Diesel - but we filled it to the neck with 2 stroke mix!. This was at 10pm at night, so we couldn't drive the car anywhere. I had to sleep in it, then push it down to this car garage just down the road, they flushed the tank for 10 Euros!

Not neccesarily, Petrol in a Diesel car is much worse.

You might be lucky and get away with just emptying the tank and filling to the brim with petrol.

It will smoke a bit as the diesel burns off but it won't damage the engine. It will damage the cat though, at the very best it will reduce its life.

Petrol in a diesel engine will fcuk it.

Petrol in a diesel engine will fcuk it.

not in my experience

bloke i bought my car off filled mine up with £20 of petrol; it conked out, drained the tank, brimmed it with diesel and 3.5 years later its running sweet as a nut

always thought diesel in petrol was certain death

Its usually the other way round, modern diesels rely on the fuel itself to lubcricate a lot of the components (because of the immense fuel pressure they run). Petrol doesn't lubricate by nature, it dries things out - so the end result of petrol in a diesel is normall huge amounts of wear to the fuel pump and injectors.

As above petrol in a diesel is a lot worse we have had a few company cars die because of it.

Hmm not sure about that.. My brother has done this 4 times (petrol in a diesel) and carried on driving them until they stop. They always seem to keep working afterwards.

Olders diesels can cope with it but modern common rails will not, I know on 5th gear a few years back and they had an old diesel which they put petrol in and it carried on working.

Petrol in a diesel engine will fcuk it.

Funny  When I was a nipper I remember my grandad telling me how he would put a tipple of petrol in his diesel to "thin it out" a bit!

Old diesels can tolerate pretty much anything - but a modern high fuel pressure diesel won't.

The OP is talking about diesel in a petrol though ...

Very lucky, you may still get problems in the future.
