Title: Well, all boyhood fantasies must come to an end....
Post by: Wh|t3R@bb|t on 13 May 2009, 17:19
It is with great sadness that I have parted company with my MkV GTI.  But I couldn't justify keeping it with all the miles I have been doing and am going to do with a new job.  Although we only spent 12 short months together, I feel it will live with me forever

Seriously though...will miss lots of things from the Badge to the drive.  But I can honestly say I wouldn't have changed it.  Dead sorted car, with a great pedigree and boyhood/rogue'ish charm.  Made me want to do bad things.  Mrs said I was like a big kid whenever I got in it....

Gone to a good home, so I am now the proud owner of a BMW 335d M Sport. Which is simply awesome and loves the motorways (well, in the 200 miles I've done in the past 24hrs).

Will still pop on here once in a while...but still have my GTI Calendar on my desk.  Thats staying till at least....erm....next year ;-)

Cheers all

Ahh great choice of car. The 335d engine is an absolute weapon!! I have fond memories of showing up a LOT of cars whilst driving the 335d!

Isnt the 335d as costly to drive as the GTI though??
What kind of MPG do you get?

Great choice - I was looking at the 335d Coupe before I bought my GTI, and will be looking again in 12 months (no decent deals were appearing I was prepared to go with at the time!)

335d is a great engine, I actually might be tempted with the 335i though when it gets round to it... I have fallen in love with petrol turbos now I have the GTI!

Enjoy!

Ok....well its hard to say as I've only had the car 24hrs.  And lets be honest, this first 24-48 hrs of having a new motor aren't gonna be a fair benchmark as normally your wragging the tits of it....However, saying that...I have done some real cruising today to and from meetings around Manchester. And I was averaging about 42mpg.  Not driving miss daisy, but 80ish on the motorway (cruise control sometimes) and then 30-40 round town.

Now...personally I have never been able to say good things about the GTI's mpg.  Which on average was even less economical than my 3.2 TT.  So the 335 didn't have a lot to beat.  But I have been averaging 30mpg in the GTI.  Combination of motorway, stop start traffic, town driving and traffic light hooliganism.

As most of my driving is what I would consider the BMW's bread and butter....hundreds of motorway miles or higher speed A roads I can be assured I'll notice the difference.  I have filled up tonight and put 50 litres in so will see how long that lasts and do a direct comparison.  But I reckon I am going to be about 150 miles per tank better off.  Call me stupid, but the time between fill ups is more important than the cost.  I just can't be arsed with always filling cars up. THe GTI did 350 miles to a tank and for me that could mean filling up twice in a day.  Which is just not practical for me...I wanna get to my destination, and then home without stopping.  And I'm a weak man..so those 500 calorie Ginsters Sandwiches and Turkish Delights in service stations are just to hard to resist.  Yum Yum.  So this car could be good for my waist line too.

Yes....indeed.  Various places seem to offer remaps. The elite seems to be DMS  but they're a long way from me.  However, 290 horses and 580nm of Torque isn't exactly needing to be tweaked.  And based on the above, conscious of MPG.  If I keep the car for a while (which is the plan) it could deffo be an option in 12 months or so.

+2, stunning car, you will find the mpg will get better as it learns your driving style.

You'll be back in the GTI fold.

Once you've got rid of the awful job that requires hundreds of motorway miles per day.

I heard that in derestricted form, those 35d engines will slay the current crop of M cars!  One of my customers is very proud that his 535d is an M5 killer :)

Very nice motor, if space in my street wasn't tight I'd have one as my next motor too.

I've been in a few of those 335D's and they are rapid (not as rapid as the ED30 though )

Good choice

The 335d will kill any GTI in all environments, they are just phenomenly quick cars.... when chipped I dont think there's anything that can touch them

Chalk and cheese :)

Although to be honest I liked the way the E92 3.0d drove more than the 335d. The 335d just did it with ease, you had no real notion of how fast you were going!

Like to see your customers oil burner kill 500 highly strung horses in that V10,  must be some chip he has had stuffed in that thing  :nerd:

Think he is living in fantasyland
