Title: Can anyone tell me what these dials are out of?
Post by: mk3valver on 13 May 2009, 17:11
its a mk3 gti but are they 8 or 16v? The reason I ask is I have a 16v and I've read in a couple of place's the clocks have more on the speedo and the revs, but mine doesn't just wondering if they've been changed?

Right so the VR6 and the 16v are different? And that would make the 8 and the 16v the same?

As john said 16v and vr6 clocks go to 160 mph and the 8v clocks goto 140mph so the clocks you have got in are the right clocks for your car...

actually all 3 are a little different. the red lines are all in different places on the scale... 16v redlines at 6.8 or somewhere around there. vr6 redline at around 6.3.... 8v is different still.....

This is really weird all paperwork and history corresponds with the car but it's got the wrong dial's! could I put 16v white dials over the top or would all the speed and revs be wrong?

This is true 100%.

Ani clocks were white, and i think early to late dials changed the design slightly as i have seen different ones in different cars of the same engine type. But aslong as u have the correct speedo for the car, then they will read right.

It does read about 5-7 mph out as per my navman but I cant remember which way? And mike I'm not sure whether these are the right dials as it's a 16v and the clock's read 140? Unless Vw put 140 in later models for some reason it looks like I have the wrong clock's!

Sorry mate after reading above post again are you saying that they may have changed the dials in later model's?

Well i have an 8v, same dials as you but the petrol gauge is diferent, with 4 red lines.

The speedo will read out, its an old car mate. Mine is about 5mph out 70mph.

The dials are deffinaly the correct 8v dials, what year is your car?

You dont have a problem, so dont worry about it. There were a lot of developments in the eira that the mk3 was made, hence why they differ early to late.

Yeah I put it down to the calibration at the time I was just repling to the question. It's a 97 P 16v. Is there anyway of me checking a part number off the clock's too the rest of the car to see if their right? It's not a major issue it's just pecking my head!

Cheer's for the reply's anyway!

any mk3 clocks will plug in and work fine..but the 16v should have 160mph on the speeedo (although some early models have a speedo that starts at 10mph with a needle rest)

The clocks you have are rare Motometer ones, most if not all mk3's comes with TRW or VDO dashes.

16v goes up to 160mph

8v goes up to 140mph

and redline markings differ on 16v to 8v.

Well I'm certain it's not been clocked iv'e got loads of history and MOT's, but I've heard you can have clock's adjusted so maybe someone's swapped them or maybe for some reason they just came as standard from the factory???? I'm confused and would like to know whether their original or not how could I find out?

I would suspect the orignal clocks at some point failed and were replaced with a s/h set.

Mk3 clocks are failure prone (the lcd's go blank!) but i wouldnt worry if your history tallies as its easy to ammend the mileage (and not uncommon!)
I would guess there non original (and vagcat says the 16v has 160mph dials too)

Recently mine were replaced, there is a tag with a date on the back of the clocks. Try and find out if that remotely matches up with the age of your car.

motometer ones are still used by vw nowadays, but in their less common cars like the bora and bettles.
