Hi All,
I have seen a VW GTI, which has been imported from Germany.
Its a 2001. I called DVLA, and its all registered here. But when I called the dealers, they say they dont have any record of it, as it was not bought/serviced at any of the dealers.
It has FSH from indy's, and I checked the previous 3 MOT's/ VIN with DVLA, which all matches up.
Is there anything else I need to look out for?
All the spec seems to be the same. The dealer said that the only con is that they came with 2 years warranty, instead of three.
Is there any con's in buying an import? Anything I should look out for?
cheeers.

Warranty is irrelevant due to the age of the car. Best just to do all the normal checks to make sure its a straight car and make sure it is undersealed. Some makets don't have or need it.
Can do an HPI check also just to make sure the history in the UK isn't hiding anything.
-
Well
I did a full HPI with autocheck which came out clean.
I also called DVLA and checked all the previous (three) MOT's/VIN and this was also all spot on with the millage.
The only issue I found was that when I called up for insurance and gave them the numbr plate, it came up with 3 door GTI - But I presume this is not a major, as DVLA have it registered as a 5 door.
I'm due to pick it up this weekend, so just wana make sure its not a lemon!
-
being a complete numpty, but who would I know if it is undersealed.
-
The only thing I would add is it worth bearing in mind that its value will be lower than a uk car and also can and will be harder to sell.
-
I wouldn't say harder to sell, the fact it's an import will be reflected in the price your paying, so when you come to sell you need to remember to do the same. Also your insurance may be slightly different with it being an import? As long as your service history is stamped, it's registered in the uk and HPI show's it to be clean then I'd go ahead if you are happy with the car! Good luck!
-
Well everything seems to be in order, its got 33K on the clock, the service history tally's up, all the previous MOT add up, DVLA have it registered, HPI is clear, and I am paying slightly below the value.
thanks guys!

Is that 33k genuine seems low for an 8 year old car or have the clocks been changed.
-
There's not any signs of the clocks being changed, and there seems to be plenty of service history, so looks all god at the moment....

If it had KM clocks in it then they would have been changed, you say lots of history but how far back does that go.
-
History goes back to 2005, I spoke to DVLA and they said the car was registered in 2001, I was told that the guy ordered the car from Germany, and not the main dealers here, to save a few £££, hence he has owned it from new.
-
So 4 years worth of history is missing with only 33k on the clock, still seems low to me.
How much are you getting it for.
-
Just googled and called a VW garage, which I remember seeing an invoice for whilst looking through the paperwork.
They confirmed that they serviced the car in 2004 and it had 15K on the clock! So I this confirms that the car was definitely in the UK then.
I'm paying 3.5K for it.
Its a 2001 GTI turbo.
The bodywork is mint which is what attracted me, and the interior is also very tidy.
Its not got recaro's (which I really wanted), but its got bucket style seats which are heated.
Only left a £50 deposit at the moment,
-
Not 100% sure but I would say that £3500 is strong money with it being an import, I might be wrong however.
-
Thanks for your advise mate!
Will have another good look around it when I go, but tbh i've got my heart set on it. I previously saw3 other GTI's, and believe me they were absolutely crap, yet they were advertised as being mint!
First Mod will be armrest!

No worries, not sure what it is worth, someone else might be able to answer that one.

Hi mate, £3500 being an import sound's like a lot I've seen some lovely U.K Gti t's at that kind of money. Admitedly that mileage is low but does it make up for the fact it's an import? I've just txt my mate who's got a current glass's guide, I've asked him to value a 33k mile 2001 golf gti t. The decision is obviously down to you, it's your cash! But anything that you can do or say to get more money off the car is a big plus I guess! By the way how much was it up for originally?
-
Oh and is it a Y plate or 51? and a 3 door or 5? Cheer's
-
its a 5 door.
He wanted 4K.
I've been looking around for some time, pistonheads etc. I wanted it to be low mileage as i plan to keep it for sometime. Most that I have seen around that price tend to be 1999 - 2000 cars with excessive mileage, and battered body work!!
-
I saw a 2001 3 door in silver with 74k on the clock last week and that was £3k, yes double the mileage but still good! My mate's left work without checking but recon's it's a lot. Find out how long he's had it and just try telling him you've found another, I recon at £3500 he'll still have a good profit in it if he's had it for any longer than 3/4 week's he'll want out and try and keep the deal by offering you some more off, maybe? worth a shot! I used to be a car salesman mate and love the art of negotiation, you don't need to be rude or snotty with him just tell him you've found a U.K spec same year with good mile's at the same price and if you dont get anywhere then it's still your's! Good luck!
-
well.... i went round today and bought it! I am now a proud baby father of a VW GTi turbo!!!!
been driving for about 3 hours and love it!
thanks for all the advice guy, very helpful.
will post pics once i've taken some. first mod will be arm rest. previously had a BMW, and i miss the armrest!
