Title: Cold Start injector
Post by: edd16v on 13 May 2009, 08:50
Hi,

My 16v k-jet is really hard to start in the mornings sometime take 5 or 6 turns of the key to get it going. once running it seems to be fine. If I re-start the car once its warm it starts fine.

After looking through other posts I think it sound like its either the Cold start valve/injector or the thermo time switch.

Does anyone know how I can work out which one of these is at fault because there about 80£ each from vw and if I get the wrong one then its quite a lot of money to wast?

Any help here would be great.

Regards
Edd

take the 5th inj off the inlet, disable the coil (disconnect the black wires) then sit the 5th inj in a bucket or something.  crank the engine over and it should spray a nice even cone of fuel for a few seconds then stop :)

So this should tell me if either of these two are the problem but if no fuel comes out it won't tell me whether its the 5th injector or the thermo time switch! How do I work out if its the 5th injector or the time switch??

the green white wire to the thermotime switch should be shorted to ground when the engine is stone cold, and it shouldn't be when the engine is warm :)
the red/black wire to thermotime switch should get 12v when car cranking in addition.

on the thermoswitch the green/white wire runs to the thermoswitch so check this for continuity at both ends, the black wire should again get 12v when the car cranking.

To test the 5th inj itself put 12v across it and it should spray fuel, but only when there is fuel pressure obv, jump the fuel pump relay.
