Hello guys
Just wondering. What sort of Fuel Consumption are you guys getting on the 1.8T GTi?
Sorry if it has been asked before. I did search and check the FAQ section. Thanks!
Mike
-
anything from 15mpg up to 40mpg plus depending on your driving style and engine code really
-
Thanks Rhyso
Just asking for a friend. I hope I wont get flamed for asking...
-
Search!!!

no but i will flame you for getting my name wrong
jeez

Blond moment
And I did search.... All I could find was fuel consumption on a 2 litre GTI :lipsrsealed:
-
i got 1.8t AGU i get 35mpg easy if i drive like a human
but when booting it get ruffly 25mpg (or so the clock says )
-
I get 32mpg out of my non turbo 1.8 20v on a run and about 28.5 around town. The 1.8 20v Turbo is meant to be a lot better from What Car reviews. Urban states 32.1 for mine and 33.9 for the Turbo, thought it would have been the other way round!
I know Billy was getting low 20's in his old 20v Turbo, but that was running almost 200bhp. I think if he drove it well he could get around late 20's to early 30's.
Think TDI is the way to go these days. Heeeeeps of torque, fantastic performance and excellent economy! I went out in my mates Bora TDI thats had a re-map. That car is fast! Pulls like a train in every gear, I honestly could not believe the performance and this was from Tring to Milton Keynes, just over 20 miles, then to read the computer that read 39.8mpg........consdiering this was almost flat out all the way! Next car is def' a TDI Golf

Mine has 198BHP and can reach 44MPG on a long run! ?Normally get about 36MPG. Oh and once you have a diesel you'll want a petrol again!
-
I can get anything between 25 and 40 mpg, depending on how I drive!
-
Oh and once you have a diesel you'll want a petrol again!
really?

-
Thats a good point but I test drove a derv at the weekend, tons of torque but changing every few seconds I was nackered by the end of it. And derv sound... :undecided:
Rather have lower fuel consumption and drive a big turbo petrol car. Some dervs on here including your Rhyso are really nice though
-
Oh and once you have a diesel you'll want a petrol again!
more like;
once you have a diesel you'll NEVER want a petrol again!

Not being a dick but I think the only people who big up diesels are diesel owners
-
i filled the tank up on friday and got 412 miles before the light came on, average over the journey was around 41 i believe.
Rich
-
i get around 20-25  if im driving like a saint then i can get around 30 and on long runs 30-36 again depending on driving style, mine doesnt do me any favours on the fuel consuption front not sure if thats since i had it remapped  cant help myself
-

you could also say the only people that bash diesels are people that own petrols

Not true, I knew someone who had a saxo 1.5D with 112k on the clock, he hated it
I just prefer petrol all around tbh, each to their own.

you forget I used to own a GT TDI!
-
Mines a standard power (for now...) 150bhp 1.8T and i consistantly get 33-34mpg on a long run. No idea about short journeys as i never bother looking lol!
-
Best thing about 1.8T's, you can boot them asmuch as possible then instead of looking at your mpg just change it to average speed, faster you go the more it goes up :D

Please dont get me started on the oil :D
-
Average 35 to 37 normally but got it to 40 plus on a long run, 1.8 GTI T remapped, miltek, CDA air box.
-
lol at newsflash.
I get about 32 in my 1.8T but I am lead to believe if you dont have the undertray you get a few less miles per galon.
I agree with the onc eyou get a diesel you will want a petrol. I sold my Nissan 200sx Turbo due to fuel costs, bought a 106 diesel and was bored sh!tless so bought a 306 diesel and kept saying Minicab :D.
I think the new PDI engines are much smoother and quieter but I do prefer my 1.8T now. Best of both worlds, not too bad on juice and fairly swift even before a remap.
-
No undertray fitted on my wifes, try using decent fuel, only put shell V MAX in and noticed an improvement when we started this.
-
Thanks everyone. This thread is intended to help a newcomer to the world of the MK4 GTI and you guys have been very helpful.
Thanks
-
I've got a 1.8T which has been remapped by Revo and has a full stainless exhaust (sports cat), and was dyno'd at 229BHP. My trip to work is 30 miles and I can get, at best 41MPG but that's driving like a nun... If i have a little squirt now and then i average out at around 34MPG.
I picked up an SPS1 off Ebay a few weeks ago. When the mapping is set to factory standard, I get about 3MPG less per 30 mile drive believe it or not.. oh, and it feels flat as hell... Once you've remapped your 1.8T I think there are few cars that can match that kind of fun per £.
-
Do some work Alan.
Owned
-
I've got a AUM 1.8 20vT and i have had as high as 44mpg on a 36 mile route, but that was driving at about 40mph as the traffic was bad and there was about 3miles of downhill.
Usually im around 35-38
-
mines a mapped aum and running 221bhp and going to work (A roads dual carriageway and town) i generally get 29-33 taking it steady  i can get 34-35 and on motorway runs about 36-38ish had 40ish but that never happens now  didnt get it for fuel consumption  to do that i would have joined steve n rhys and got a sootburner :lipsrsealed:
-
I would remap mine if all it would cost is the remap, unfortunately I would need to replace the clutch and coil packs too no doubt so I am sticking to standard for now. May be adding an airfilter soon for a nicer roar under thottle though.

Hello Guys.
Please read the thread below....
For those who are lost... The thread here was for a friend of my mums who wanted a GTi. She asked me to help her and two days ago I posted a thread on another forum asking about ways I could look up the VIN of a vehicle and its history as I didnt my mums friend to get a lemon... The hunt started and these are the results... Because of this c*ock up she now wont be buying a MK4 GTi... Which is a pity as Im sure you will agree. Take a read below.
The original Post: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=4667.msg72324;boardseen#new
Alright guys... Today there is a lesson to be learnt...
If you remember In my first post I asked for a way to check the history of a vehicle by using its VIN. I didnt get much response from the forum but continued. Now to explain.
The car is for a friend of my mums who has always wanted a GTi. She found out from my mom that I was a GTI fanatic and begged me to help her with advice and help. I naturally obliged.
She then emailed me this description of the vehicle:
Volkswagen Golf 18T GTi Exec,
2003 Silver Metallic 114 600 km, Petrol, Hatchback, 5 Doors, Manual, 1 Owner, ABS, Adjustable seats, Adjustable steering column/wheel, Air bags, Alarm remote controlled, Alloy wheels, Bumper and mirror in color, CD Multichanger, Central doorlocks with remote control, Chair heating, Chairs adjustable in height, Climate Control, Computer, Electric mirrors, Electric sunroof, Electric windows, Foglights, Full service history, Immobiliser, Leather interior, Power assisted steering, Radio/CD. Awesome!!R 114 495
This was taken directly off this link hosted by a company called Imperial Select. A very trustworthy and common car reseller:
http://search.autotrader.co.za/dpmza/cars_advert?did=2000785&respp=10&photo=1&sort=5&searchform=0&locale=dpmza.CARS.1&id=200910185602743#
At this point I advised Jane (Fictional Name) that this was an absolute bargain and she must ask for the car to be kept aside for her. As the advert said. What an awesome vehicle.
I told Jane I would get the car sussed out and called Volkswagen Cape Town (Head Office). After supplying them the VIN they told me everything I already knew. They then told me they did the first service on the vehicle.
From there onwards the car should have had a 40 000km service. And a 80 000km service. VW could not tell me if this had been done as there was no record of it. They could however tell me that the car had been serviced at the Bellville branch.
I then continued to call the Bellville branch and after supplying the VIN asked for everything they had. The results were disturbing.
1. VW Belville Serviced the vehicle on 27/09/2007
2. At that time the car had: 120 936km on the clock. Anyone seeing the issue?
3. It was a big service. Cambelts, plugs, bearings and a variety of other issues. Even dodgier.
4. There is no longer a record of any servicing and no documents were processed to VW stating that Imperial Select now owned the car.
So two years ago this vehicle had 120 936km on the clock. Yet its selling for 117 000km on the clock? According to VW the car needed many parts replacing. Possibly from an accident?
I then called Jane and told her the news. Naturally she was flabergasted and upset as she was going to buy the vehicle this weekend. I have since talked to her about a MK5 TDI or 2.0 Litre Trendline. I personally am shocked as I never expected this.
So lesson for today.
NEVER BUY A VEHICLE WITHOUT CHECKING ITS HISTORY VIA A VIN CODE WITH AT LEAST 2 VW DEALERS!

Surely there must be more than 1 MK4 1.8T in SA, cant she just look at getting another?
-
Thats SA for you......you ALWAYS need to check vehicle history! I got caught like this in SA with a Civic vti but quickly sold it and got another
-
and i'm getting 5miles per liter
how to sort it?
-

very very reasonable, hardly rev over 4000 in any gear

what i meant was - town, motorway driving, A Roads, B Roads
-
Mostly in town, get around 280miles per tank in which 100 miles are on motorway
-
That does seem pretty low actually.
-
i ran vag-com and it gave me this info
VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-US

and then vag-com stopped running for some reason, can this be reason for low mileage???
-
get the sensor changed ASAP
if your temperature is not reading correctly the ECU will adjust by increasing / decreasing the amount of fuel / air etc etc
new sensor is about £20 from VW
-
i want my TDI back  I would rather have my tdi back over any petrol golf, except a R32
