Speaking as his royal nubness i have no idea! Double din i reckon (i presume that means it takes up the whole space and not half yeah?) Not too bothered about touch screen tbh would be nice though. Any idea on costs?

looks pretty neat.

looks good.
upgrading the headunit improves the speakers a bit but you still might want to consider changing the speakers or adding a small sub.

I'm looking at something like the Pioneer F700/900bt with uprated speakers. Already got the JBL sub to go in the wheelarch ;)

The Pioneer is a bit pricey though - circa £700. But it does have built in satnav, so deduct the cost of a TomTom, and it's looking pretty good. What I really like is the Ipod interface. V good.

The gadget show did a review of 3 units last night, a pioneer that retailed around the £650, an alpine that was around £800 and the star of the show was a kenwood unit that was around £1100.  I think the pioneer had the nicest interface/sat nav, the alpine had the best screen but overall the kenwood was tops for audio quality and general usability.

Cheers

Are you building a custom enclosure or have you tracked down a ready made wheel arch enclosure?

There is a cheaper pioneer one which I like the look of but doesn't have satnav.

thats alot of money for aftermarket imo.

RNS-510... keeping it real, can be had for £800 or so. Would spend the rest on speakers etc.

I'm doing my own install - instructions are HERE (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=81119.0)

Liking the look of that head unit too.

Your brave! I desperately want an enclosure like that but dont think im up to it! I dont think i'd have the patience. Anyone got any idea how much a fitter would charge to build one like it?

That would be my build write up then Dano
Great to see someone else having a go at it.

You can still get the DNX7200 new if you search around and they are a damn fine HU. Cost now is around £650.

Hooked mine up with Bluetooth, IPOD Video lead and a natty park reverse camera.

I went the single din route with an amp and 2 small subs and the sound is a million times better, its brilliant.

I went the single din route purely for budget reasons. It sounds just as good if not better than some double din as its a really good Alpine single din unit but the double ones dont half look better.

The sound is OK, I'm no expert so its perfectly fine for me. I do want to replace my MFD2 though with the lovely looking and better featured RNS-510. Do you think anyone would take my MFD2 as a trade in? Or just worth selling on ebay? And for what price?

And as to not go too off topic, I'd recommend the RNS-510 and a speaker upgrade too :)

Dont waste your money on overpriced units from VW. Aftermarket is the way forward.

All imo of course.

I dont think £800 fitted is a bad price tbh... but will defo agree with the sound quality of aftermarket systems is much better that the RNS510. Had it on full volume the other day and the speakers were distorting chronically, not to mention it wasnt very loud.

Well, the main reason i want a new HU is for sound quality purposes so will defo be after market, narrowed it down to a kenwood or pioneer, double din, pref with sat nav. HU first and maybe a sub later. Thanks for the help guys!

I'd say pioneer or kenwood double din units are the way forward. Alpine is good as well.
Let us know what you decide on and post pics when fitted

im looking at changeing my HU aswell, just sold the MFD2, was looking at going down the aftermarket double din route, but im worried about my car getting broken into, as they are more attractive to thief's and have had a few mates with there's taken recently.

I think the VW units are less attractive to theif's...but they are actually more expensive then aftermarket HU's.

Hurdy has a brilliant front cover which will resolve you worries about people breaking into your car. Cant find a picture of it, Im sure he will post it up when he sees this. Its a blank cover which looks like a standard VW HU that covers your nice new HU.

How much did you sell the MFD2 for if you don't mind me asking?

I already have one - I know they are :D

I was looking at getting the RNS-510, just interested to see what I'd get for the MFD2

I have another question (hopefully it adds to the thread, rather than hijack it!), as I have sat nav with my MFD2, will any aftermarket double din unit with sat nav work seamlessly with the VAG-COM and connections?
Title: Re: In car audio suggestions?
Post by: AlanD on 16 May 2009, 10:32
The HU itself has its own inbult GPS and will work, mine is single din so Im not really in the best position to answer weather or not any double din will fit as Im not sure what the connections are on the back. The single din units require a CANBUS adaptor to obtain all the functions (i.e auto dimming, speed sensor volume control etc) but is not required to get it to work (as I dont have it as its a total ripoff). At a guess Id imagine the double din would be similar ? Anyone ?

Thanks anyway AlanD. I'm scouring the Audio sections and other boards - I'm very much a noob in the car audio department!

Im umming and arring about getting a double din as Iv got a bit more money now. I want new wheels aswell tho. FFS I need to win the lottery and all this wouldn't be a problem lol

you will need the canbus adapter to work with a double din nav unit as this will provide the speed pulse to the unit. They are about £50 so budget for that. With the adapter it should all integrate seamlessly and turn on and off with car, dim with lights etc.
