Title: Having a look at a mk5 GTI this weekend, need some advice!
Post by: sambo on 11 May 2009, 21:33
Hi mk5 chaps.

Getting old (25) and starting to want a little more comfort in the car and a new engine to play with .

So thinking of changing over to a mk5 soon and this car has popped up fairly close to me. Spec as follows:

2005 -05 reg

57,000 miles, 3 Door Hatchback, Black, Petrol, Manual 6 speed. Full leather interior, multi-function steering wheel, heated seats, auto wipers and mirrors. Auto xenon lights. Split rear seats with ski flap,18" monza alloys. Remote central locking, Front electric windows, heated Electric door mirrors, Centre Armrest, Adjustable steering wheel, Power assisted steering,Cruise control, Dual Control Air conditioning, Anti theft system, ABS, 4 new tyres, 12 mths MOT, 6 months tax, full VW service history, Good condition

What would you boy's (and girl's) guesstimate the price to be for a car of this spec?

Also any common faults to keep an eye out for, bushes need replacing around this mileage etc, coming fron a mk4 i'm used to thing's needing replacement

Any other tips etc would be great, had a quick scour through the maintenance section but nothing jumped out at me

Cheers, Sam

Good choice!!! Not sure on a price but incase you dont know, the 18inch monza's, MFSW, Xeon lights, centre armrest, and cruise control are optional extras so a good spec! Oh and probly the leather seats as its an early model.
Common faults, dash rattle from centre console (no biggy!), White worm on the alloys and VW badges.
Mines not that old so havent had many issues yet! but i'm sure you will get an idea on this forum.

I'd say around the £9k mark, depending on the actual condition of the car, including if any major service items are due i.e. tyres, brakes, cambelt, major service etc....
Title: Re: Having a look at a mk5 GTI this weekend, need some advice!
Post by: sambo on 11 May 2009, 22:05
Whats the cambelt intervals on these? Wish it was £9k, price's seem to have gone up a little if anything recently.

It's got 4 new tyres as per ad, not sure on make. Seller is asking  £10,750 which is too much for that age I thought, would have considered for £10k as the spec is good and leathers, reckon it's still too much?

Cheers, Sam

over 10k seems a bit steep for the mileage and age tbh mate. I picked up mine from the main vw stealers about 3 or 4 weeks ago, 56 plate 19k miles 3 dr, no toys, £12.5k, 1 year vw warranty. be patient, there are bargains out there if you're willing to wait!
Title: Re: Having a look at a mk5 GTI this weekend, need some advice!

Sadly enough I think around the 10k is probably about right (sadly cos I paid a fair chunk more a year ago).  Sounds like a great spec.

My advice would be to make sure the air con is working properly (from this forum it seems there are issues with this).

Check that there isn't a grinding / squeeky noise from the steering at low speeds ( a low whir is OK as its an electric motor that provides the assistance rather than hydraulics).

Check that there isn't any water in the high level brake light / that all the LED's are working properly.  Replacing the high level brake light involves replacing/spraying the spoiler at a cost of £400...

Other than that my experiece to date is that there are a lot fewer niggly / annoying little faults than there was with the mk4 (touch wood touch wood) but then again they are only just starting to get to 'that age' when these faults come through.

Officially the cambelt is now due to be changed at 4 years (and yours is at the milage that it should be done anyway) so if thats not been done thats £500 (from a stealer) that can be haggled.

I came from a 1.8T myself and the difference is phenomenal.  You will fall in love

Good info there cheers all.

Have been searching pistonheads/ebay/autotrader for a while now and i thought 10k seemed about right. The misses doesn't want DSG, i'm not keen on the interlagos trim and fancy a few more toys to what i have now (which was top spec in it's day!) so quite interested in the spec of the above car.

My mates a VW master tech so cambelt change etc won't be an issue, just an excuse to knock some cash off the price

Only thing that let's the mk5 down is the half a job colour coding on the rear bumper IMO but that will be sorted out later. Just a shame most second hand examples about seem to be in black, red or silver. Ideally fancied a white or grey but there like hen's teeth!!

Doesn't sound too bad to me - looking at the VW site, (a) GTI's are becoming harder to find, which means (b)they're going up in price!! :(

Let us know how you get.

Personally I think all gti (55) 2005 plates are worth much more than that, expect to pay £13k!!!! LOL  (one mans pathetic attempt to talk up the meerkat).

Sad state of the market that they've dropped so much in a year!

If I were selling I would be "hoping" for 11k, milly, fully loaded, 35k, all 4th year work done. In reality though if I took to the stealers I would be surprised to get £9k. So somewhere in between sounds right but your mileage is higher than average.  .....

Thats it, good man.

Due to the high price and the fact that under the skin its really no different to the mk5 I cant see the mk6 being bought as much as the mk5 was, so I actually think prices will level off and stay relatively high due the demand for good mk5's..(fingers crossed fingers crossed...)

Vehicle details

Make VW Golf
Variant 3 door Hatchback Manual
Engine 2.0 Petrol
Trim  GTI
Year/Plate  2005 05
Mileage 57,000

Valuation details

Excellent condition     £9520
Average condition     £8580
Below average condition £7640
Retail     £11400
Cost new     £19797

This is from Glasses guide.
As you can see a VW dealer would retail at £11400, plus maybe another £600 for the added spec, so I would expect to see it on a forecourt for around £11995.

More importantly, the trade in value is what counts. If the car is in good nick, with the extras, I would be looking at a trade in value of around £9500.

Therefore, if you can get the car for £10K, you are close to buying it at book money - it just means if you decided to get rid in a few months, you wont lose much! Not that you will, the GTI is a fantastic car!!!!

Hope this helps,

Andy

hiya mate.. i got my 06 plate gti about six weeks ago and i love it..:) ( best car ever )  i might of paid a little over the odds but its the one i wanted and to me thats all that matters really... init?. it had 27k on the clock auto wipers lights, tyre peasure monitor, ipod connection etc etc.. in the end i paid 13300 with a three year warranty, might be a little high but like i said before if its the car you want get it... just my opinion of course, good hunting :)

I got my 55 plate a couple of months ago with the same miles and same spec + sat nav, but the 17" alloys (which I actually prefer), for less than 9k - which is less than trade - just right place right time and knowing the seller... but looking around 10-11k for that spec was what they were on Autotrader and Pistonheads. I test drove a newer one with less miles at a dealership up for 14k! It was in far worse nick.

Its a great car though, I'd be happy to pay over the odds (whatever that may be), to secure one with the right spec thats in tip top condition. Don't be put off with miles, if its well serviced and looked after - its almost irrelevant.

i changed from a mk 4 gti to a mk 5 gt tdi and i have no regrets at all, far better car imo :)
(p.s im looking to get rid of the monza's on my car if anyone is interested, they were sold to me by a friend who upgraded to 18's and i dont want my car to look like a gti replica as i had the bumper fitted yesterday)

I'd say with those options like the xenons etc i would go for it if you can get them down closer to 10K.As long as its what you want.
As you say haggle money off using excuses such as cambelt etc.

Cheers for the replies all!

It's sold  anyway  missed that one.

Not overly worried, not into rushing into buying something, would rather wait it out for the right one to crop up at the right price.

looking for leather, zenons, dual climate, 3 door, manual as a basic, anything else is a bonus. Want to try and keep as close too £10k as possible. Got the loan agreement confirmed so money is sorted.
Not that fussed by mileage anything up to 70k as i only do 3k a year in the car so in a few years it will be average again  :smug:

If you see anything gimme a shout!

Been a bit puzzled by insurance though, getting qouted £815 from my current insurer which i thought was a little high. (25yo with 24 yo GF as named driver, 4 yrs Ncb no points or accident's, parked on driveway overnight)

Only paying £540 for my mk4 230bhp all mod's declared

Anyone my age get a good quote, if so where from!?

Cheers, Sam

I'm 26, 3 years ncb, 9k miles a year parked on a city centre street with my 26 yo g/f with only 2 years driving experience...it was just under £500 with admiral but I think location plays a big part.

The other half has just got herself a 106 and we went for the admiral multicar insurance...the gti side of the insurance came down to £380 a year with the pug costing £220    Bloody good value if you have more than one car!

Cheers mate, just tried a few places outside of the compare sites which i find a rip off. Quite a few (admiral & directline) coming in around the £600 mark with current details.

I'm gonna pay the £180 to finish off my current deal with adrian flux and get the 5th yr NCB then shop around.

Still need a car first though!

Also worth trying their sister company Privelege - been with them for a few years now, and very competitive, although will shop around when mine is up for renewal in June

Don't like the interglos centre on the ED30 mate, also they don't seem to be holding there value as well as the mk4 25th did imo. When i get my hands on one it will be having a few tweaks to include colourcoding and pescaras i reckon.  Hoping to like it enough to keep it for a good few years, had my mk4 for 3 and a half not one to chop and change alot, just modify a  it here and there so either way its gonna lose value!

Try Greenlight insurance.  I moved to them last year when I got my 3.2 TT, then my MkV GTi DSG.  They were the chepeast by a mile.

11.5k looks like a good deal to me but as said the prices are inconsistent, saying that all the higher priced ones (50%+) aren't selling so maybe that's an indication of them being over  priced? Am i going to get bored of DSG or is the manual paddle shift still good fun?
Title: Re: Having a look at a mk5 GTI this weekend, need some advice!
Post by: Wh|t3R@bb|t on 19 May 2009, 10:13
I have to be honest, and say that I sold my GTI last week and got £13200 for it....was an 2007 GTI DSG, 30k, Leather, Climate, Cruise, 18' Monza II's.  And it excellent condition with a years warrenty left.

The problem I see at the moment is that a lot people are selling cars to get quick cash (panic selling or to pay off debt). This is making the market very inconsistent and masking some true prices.  For instance I was offered £13200 (the same amount I sold privately for) as a part ex by a main dealer (Audi) based on used prices.  I did a Parkers valuation and got over 14k.

So, as mentioned, if you go on Autotrader, Pistonheads and average the price of privately sold vehicles it is considerably less than probably what they're actually worth.

It could work in your favour though...use the above as bargaining power.  "They're not fetching much privately at the minute mate...".

I think certainly less than £12k for that car...so £11.5 should be your aiming point.

Post by: smartypants on 19 May 2009, 10:35
And as I said i bought my 55 plate fully loaded for less than 9k!

Set yourself a budget, and what spec you want (which you seem to have done), don't worry about overpriced/underpriced - if its the right car for you and within budget, who cares what you paid for it? :)

Missed that one too  sold earlier

I'm convinced the price's are on the up you lot will be happy too know.

Got my loan money through so at least I have the cash waiting, max budget £11.5k

Thats the problem living down here, most invlove a long journey which limits me too a weekend so too much time for others to sneek in and grab before me

Haha cheers for the support rhyso

Yep it's a definate now, unless i blow 11k on porn and whores  :undecided:

Seen another 2 in gloustershire but there from a dealer so prices are slightly higher. May take a trip up on saturday and see if i can haggle a go in both to decide wether DSG is for me or not... One side of me is thinking it may take the fun out of driving, the other half is thinking launch control!

Cheers for the offer AlanD  although you'll have to dig hard to find anywhere i haven't looked through already!

Spec is changing the more I look. Some pictures of interlagos look very light and  others look darker and  still have the leather if poss. Must be a 3 door as belive it or not I find it easier with my 1 yr old daughter in a 3 door, keep banging her head with the 5 door pulling here out at an angle  under 70k must have enough toys to keep me busy for 5 years +  ideally zenons but they are rare as fook! Won't buy a basic spec one though

colour choice black, white or that gunmetal grey , followed by red or silver, no to blue as i already have that..

£11.5k tops! although i'm always looking at more expensive ones to knock down on price.

The last one was up for £12.995 and he agreed to 11.5k but i was too slow, wonder how much he got for it?

I would try and get the Xenons if you can - they really make the car, they are pretty stunning!

I personally don't like cloth interior, but pics of the interlagos don't do it justice - its very nice in the flesh.

Keep going ;)

Nice one just been added to pistonheads, not sure if i like that bluey grey colour though, sure the pic's don't do it much justice either.

Could always try and get hold of zenons at a later date if the right car came up.

Did the leather only come in the one shade of grey? Some look lighter than others?
