Title: Best VW Ever?
Post by: Pimpster on 08 July 2003, 12:41
This isnt to do with what magazines think. This is to do with what you personally think.....

Come on! loads of views but not a lot of polls!!!

Title: Re:Best VW Ever?

I aim to keep this poll alive!!!! ;D
Title: Re:Best VW Ever?
Post by: Pimpster on 16 July 2003, 12:20
Its looking that way eh!

I might put this poll on all the other forums to see what the bias might be!

where are the cabrio models? surely you can't group them with the same tintop version?
Title: Re:Best VW Ever?
Post by: Pimpster on 16 July 2003, 18:18
Sorry mate, it only let me put 8 choices in so no room for them!

Hi Adam, guess you're going to have to do what I did and vote for the MK1.

Just out of interest, as I haven't tried it, is there anything stopping anyone voting more than once?

where are the cabrio models? surely you can't group them with the same tintop version?

I think so, because as soon as i go back to the page a 2nd time there is no vote option.

Nice try tho......!

the VR6 & R32 are technically not GTi's

Mk2 Gti 16v is still the best ;)
Title: Re:Best VW Ever?
Post by: Pimpster on 17 July 2003, 12:29
I never asked about GTI's tho. it just happened that most of the best ones are GTI's and the R32 and the VR6 are good enough to join them!

I would say that the MK3 GTI 8v is technically not a gti either - just a gl with a bodykit ;)....

Ah, good point, hadn't noticed that  :-[

Polls going well, getting interesting.  ;)
Looks like I'll have to talk Hazel into registering so that she can express her views.........come on Mk1 GTI  ;D

I think so, because as soon as i go back to the page a 2nd time there is no vote option.

Nice try tho......!

Thanks Rich. It appears that there are lots of unregistered viewings but not too many posts. It seems to have helped by posting the link on all the golf varieties particular forums.

I aim to get this to at least 100 polled before coming to a definitive verdict! (well kinda.....)

Regards the above bit about R32 and VR6 a GTI can be classed as a normal everyday car that has a more powerful engine than normal. As such i think the VR6 and R32 should be included by default. Also, wasnt the VR6 known as a GTI elsewhere in the world?

In relation to your second valid point I know which one I would prefer (and have)!! I'd like to see a GL keep up on a twisty road  ;)
Title: Re:Best VW Ever?
Post by: Pimpster on 17 July 2003, 13:39
like your point 8vgti!

I was kinda joking but i used to have a Pug 306xsi. Now XSI is supposed to be a lukewarm title but it would rip an 8V Gti apart on the straights and twisties, and was an equal to the 16v gti's i 'played' with.  ;D

The one thing the 8v Gti does better than that car is rattle less......

How on earth is the Mk2 8V beating a Mk1 8V?
Surely a late Mk1 with the same engine as a heavier MK2 will be better.  ???
Ben........have you told Marcus about this?

Agreed; brings a tear to the eye.

Fraid this is a popularity contest, rather than a contest on merits, and there are many 8v Mk2 GTI owners here.

Could be worse, could have a Mk3 GTI 8v leading...... :-\

I'm here Rich..  I'm outraged, you do all know the origin of all you cars dont you, yes the MK1, it is without dought the best GTI ever avalible, not as much metal, more noise, more fun, no electric windows to slow you down(wieght..)..  I recon it would blantanlty give a vr6 a run for its money on a back road somewhere, thats real driving, not all this straight line crap...

MK1's FOR EVER 8) :D ;) :)
Title: Re:Best VW Ever?
Post by: MK1_BOY on 18 July 2003, 19:21
P.S - No way would a MK2 8v beat a MK1 8v, no way...

What about the TDI's, they dont appear to be included in your poll, according to my dealer they far outsell petrol Golfs and the 150 can out perform a lot of them too.
Title: Re:Best VW Ever?
Post by: richandhazel on 20 July 2003, 00:07
I wouldn't be suprised if a modded Mk1 could beat a standard VR6, there isn't that much in it as standard:-

But then look at that torque............ ???

Title: Re:Best VW Ever?
Post by: Pimpster on 20 July 2003, 13:37
Just manged to catch a bit of time to read what i started!!

Sorry Carl, I only had 8 slots for choices, or i would have included the diesels. I've driven a Mk4 GTI T and a 130bhp Mk4 TDI. Tdi is quicker but the noise.......

There was a recent thing in Autotrader regards GTI's through the ages and the MK1 (an original unmodded VW museum piece) got its RS kicked round a circuit by a Mk4 Anniversary. I do think that the MK3 VR6 would beat an Anniversary on the same contest. The piece is in my desk at work so when i get back on monday i'll post some more details.

A great page Rich but the bit about a Mk1 beating a Mk3 16v is interesting. In the Autocar article the Mk3 also beat the Mk1 round a circuit (i think!). It probably has something to do with grip and tyre choice but i'll put more on on monday when i re-read it.

Keep the views and votes coming - this may just turn into the most viewed thread ever!

Right, got the Autocar test results:

Castle Combe race circuit. BTC Driver Phil Bennett.

Mk1 1.6 GTI: 1m 33.6 secs
Mk2 8v GTI: 1m 33.1 secs
Mk3 16v GTI: 1m 31.2 secs
Mk4 1.8T Anniv.: 1m 27.2 secs

start your arguements gentlemen........

Come on all Mk 1 drivers!! I've pulled us level, now we need that push for the title!! ;D 8) ;D 8) ;D 8) ;D

Good idea Rich about Hazel! But don't tell anyone or they'll all do it!

Mk1 1.6 GTI: 1m 33.6 secs
Mk2 8v GTI: 1m 33.1 secs
Mk3 16v GTI: 1m 31.2 secs
Mk4 1.8T Anniv.: 1m 27.2 secs

errm, hold on one moment.

A 1.6 Mk1 GTI? and an 8v Mk2 GTI?

The 1.6 was always known as a mild car, and an 8v Mk2 isn't exactly astounding. But to compare a 180brake car against a 115 and use this as some sort of comparison is a little off the mark.

To be honest, given the figures above, i'd buy the Mk2 or Mk1 and save a bucket load of money cause the Mk4 1.8T Anniversary is rubbish.

The figures speak for themselves, a 65bhp increase in power - 56% extra power, and it went round the track 6 seconds quicker?!? Hardly jaw dropping.

Regards,
Justin

Title: Re:Best VW Ever?
Post by: Pimpster on 22 July 2003, 09:00
It was to probably to compare each car that they had available that was a near to new as possible (the Mk2 has 180 miles on the clock).

It was to settle the old arguement of which is quicker overall. How else are you going to do it?

The Mk1 has 131bhp per tonne and the Mk4 has 117bhp per tonne. Thats quite a difference. As such 6 seconds is quite a huge difference. Blame that on the brakes and the grip available in the mk4.

As for the Mk4 being 'rubbish' - not sure. may not be as fun to drive as the mk1 but i bet its a helluva lot nicer to drive most of the time.

Some of the points you make are good but try and argue the the Mk2 beating the Mk1. Its good to try and concentrate on the Mk4 but what about the Mk2?!!!!

I beat a VR6 in my MK1 golf the other week, fair enough it was a bird driving but she was giving it all she had, my car just out handled, it was beautiful..  Think we should meet up golfvr6, could be very interesting.. ;)

I do agree with you mk1 boy about the handling, unless the suspension on the vr6 is uprated, and on mine it is! The standard suspension is crape on the vr6. Whats ya top speed on mk1? 115 miles per hour ha ha!! vr6 does 140. Where abouts are you? i think we should organise our own little meeting for all of us on here.
Be good to arrange some sort of meet....especially on an old runway or something. I think a lot of inaccuracies could be put right then!!! Long live the MK3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ha Ha
Title: Re:Best VW Ever?
Post by: richandhazel on 22 July 2003, 13:55
MK1_BOY's Golf is modded and I've driven it..........Its the fastest Mk1 I've ever driven, however, I haven't driven many modded ones. However, with its uprated suspension and that 2.0L engine in there, its enough to scare the sh1t out of me  :o

Hazel registered with the site last night but she hasn't voted in the poll yet.......apparently I'm not letting her drive the car enough ???
I'm being blackmailed now :o

Someone said a while ago about why the mk1 cabriolet wasnt in the list. I was thinking about doing a new poll with the title being 'Which Golf is most likely to ruin your perm'. What do you think?...... ;)

On a serious note we should clarify this poll is about standard, not modded cars.

Bearing in mind i have a Mk3 8v gti i have trouble beating most cars!!!

However, the only time i've been in a car and raced a MK1 gti was when i was in my friends 285bhp Sunny GTI-R. Never did see the back of the MK1........ ;)

I'm going to lock the voting at 50 votes so we can finally come up with the verdict.

It looks like its been a really good poll with over 600 views!

Cant believe MK2 is winning.. Whats going on, there was a clear winner in in the 70's before this poll was ever thought of.. >:(

Good poll though ;)

Anyway, was going to lock the poll but its still going lets carry on!

Well it wont be the MK3 8 valve, that thing couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.

Also the idea that MK1 BOY puts forward of a MK1 Golf GTi especially the 1588cc one with 4 speed box outdoing a VR6 Golf is the best bit of fiction since Harry Potter.
Title: Re:Best VW Ever?
Post by: MK1_BOY on 17 August 2003, 22:43
I never said they had to be standard.... But I would say that if you get a MK1 against a VR6 on a back road like the roads around Ripley, you know where I mean Golfvr6 man....  MK1 would kick arse.....   I never said anything about a boring straight line, Yawn...

Thank you tianaroja, at last someone who knows what they are on about.

And if the cars don't have to be standard then i'll have the dubsport twin engined MK2 Rallye, Think that should be fast enough for me.

Just a thought, what about those cars that are blood related??  My other halfs got a Seat Ibiza GTi and bl**dy hell its quick.  Its only the 8 valve but really spins up, surprises a lot of other cars, only slightly heavier than a Mk2 but with more torque and safer.  Looks modern too, same switchgear, engine and gearbox as my GTi - BUT - only group 10 insurance!!!  Its a P reg, low miles, full history, paid less than 3K for it.  Now that is a bargain...
