Just bought a G reg 8v about a week ago, had an excellent service history, drives really nice etc etc..
However I am now getting more and more problems..
The dash lights now dont work, the dials dont work, fuses keep blowing, stereo fuse keeps blowing, lights dont work just full beam does, and the engine keeps stuttering if I put my foot down just a little bit. Any ideas.. I have a feeling something is shorting out, but have had a good look around and I cant seem to find any loose ends or anything that might be shorting out.
Please please please can someone give me some ideas on what might be going wrong. Don't really wanna have to fork out loads to take it to VW :(
Thank you guys :(

I'd start by pulling the radio out and checking the wiring back there :)
-
Location?! I'd start with the Radio too, then take a peep at your X relief relay and possibly the headlight switch and associated wiring

Make sure the drainage holes in your raintray aren't blocked by leaves... this causes the raintray to fill up with water, which then permeates through seals into things like your fusebox!

Thank for the input I'm gunna go have a look now and see if I can find anything :S

Right well now the f**king car died on me and had to get the recovery people out. Engine overheated and coolant went everywhere! f**k sake. Looks like I might need a new head yay.
Any ideas on how much this will cost?

Feel for you buddy, its a risk with buying a 'new' old motor. Thats probably one of the quickest declines from 'running well to 'complete disaster' i've seen though. :undecided:

When the headlights don't work and the dials don't work - it sounds like a short in the headlight loom. My H4's had melted a while back and were shorting, end result - no dials when the lights were on.
Are you sure the head is gone - sounds like a core plug just popped out? Doesn't mean the head is away, just that it could have been a loose plug that popped under pressure.

Right well I called my mechanic today and he said that its very unlikely that its the head... could be one of three things, either its not sparking, there no fuel going into the engine, or one other thing that I cant remember... He's going to pop over and have a look at it tomorrow for me and see what the verdict is.
On the plus side though I install all my sound system today xD:
two 10" 1000w subs
2000w amp
front and rear speakers
and headunit :)
and I took off a few parts that were rusted, wire brushed them off and are now resprayed :P fitting tomorrow

You definately have your priorities right then

Well if he bought the parts before it broke down (which I'm assuming he did as he already has all of the sound system) then there's no point putting it off, it's not like he's coughing out more money that could right now be going to fixing it, and I'm sure he just wants to crack on and do what he can while he can, seeing as the mechanic won't make it round til tomorrow (today?), he's just bought the car, all he wants to do is play around with it, christ. I was/am in the same boat

Install it, fine, but hold off switching the stereo on until the motor is sorted. As long as there is a chance the electrics could be at fault then you dont really wanna add to the problem

The mechanics coming tomorrow at 3 and hes gunna have a look at the electics as well...
I made sure there everything was wired correctly and everything was insulated, no open wires or anything so hopefully didn't make anything worse.
