This week I became the proud owner of my first Golf Gti after buying a P reg Mk3 16v. Having become more and more depressed with my company 1.2 Polo, I finally decided to give it back to work and drove the 120 miles from Durham to Chorley to buy the golf i'd been looking at on the autotrader website for a couple of weeks. I am really pleased with the car and it's performance etc but I seem to have a temperimental ignition. At first i thought it was something to do with the alarm/immobilser but I have deactivated it and the problem remains. Sometimes when i turn the key, the dash warning lights, the stereo and the blowers come on but nothing happens when i try to turn the engine over. Through trial and error, i have discovered that if i turn the key quickly, it seems to work better. I only got one key with the car as the previous owner snapped the spare. It is quite battered and slightly twisted. Does anyone know if this key is the problem or whether it's more likely to be the starter motor itself? (When the engine does start, it turns over with no hesitation and starts straight away, it seems to be all or nothing)
I will be very gratefull of any suggestions.
Cheers ???

Sounds like you may have a dodgy ignition switch mate, get it shecked out / swopped for a new one
