Title: air con
Post by: sunnylunn on 10 May 2009, 16:30
my air con has stopped working, it only blows out warm air. would it just need recharging?the blower works fine and it also blows hot if asked.
its an ed 30 2 1/2 years old. how often does the system need a recharge and does anyone know roughly how much. dont suppose its covered under warranty by any chance? thanks in advance guys.

hi mate my 2006 gti aircon stopped working last month so took it to my local aircon service fella for him to take a look he plugged it in and checked the system which was fine and still had 90% gass and oil levels even after 3 years and 40,000 miles so took it back to dealers as its just about still under warranty and had a big row with the because they were saying the first thing that they wanted to do was a full aircon service that would cost me over £100 obviously i went mad and demended that they atleast check it all over before trying to charge me as i told them it had already been checked for gas levels etc, Anyway after they agreed to look at it first it turned out that the compressor had blown up (a common problem apparantly) luckily it was all covered under warranty as took them 5 hours to sort it out after ordering the new compressor which cost £700 plus labour charges (joke) anyway it all tuned out good in end as they serviced whole system and re-gassed etc which saved me money as was due a aircon service next april (4 years old)
If it is just that you have ran low on gas etc a refil at local place is usualy between £45 and £55 hope this helps mate

I dont think the Aircon on GTI's is very good anyway? I used to have a Type R now that was cold very cold. I'm on my 4th GTI now and I still dont think they are up to Scratch asfar as aircon's go  But car is fab swings & round abouts I suppose. My opinon, but opinon's are like arse all's and we have one but I prefer my own one

mines goin in stealers 2day because aircon doesnt blow cold. 56-plate gti only had for 9 weeks. they tried to fob me off saying it will just need re-gassing & isnt covered under warrenty but i just told them im not paying out anything after only 9 weeks as it was a vw approved car. anyway im hoping they will check the compressor as ive heard quite a few instances where these can b a problem.

I try and avoid using mine as it murders my MPG and I cry when I get home because its so low. Windows down and sunroof open ftw.

Windows and sunroof open seriously affect the drag on a car though which will impede your MPG :)

I dare say air con is a lot worse - I'm the same, econ all the way - sunroof open!

I think at motorway speeds its more economical to have the a/c on and the windows shut but in and around town its the other way round..

Oh yeah I agree, I find that just leaving it on econ on the motorway lets in enough cold air for me unless its a roasting hot day, and lets face it, we dont get many of them.

My car has just had its second year service. While it was in the service bay I went to talk to the Technician, as you do. The only fault that the car was showing was a low gas pressure level in the air con system. They re-pressurised the system for free and added a UV dye to show any leaks. I need to take it back in a couple of weeks for them to look for leaks with a UV light.

He told me it could be a sealor valve, one of the lines, the compressor or the condensor at the front of the car. If a stone has gone through the condensor its not covered under warrenty!  And the front end needs to come off!  So after reading this thread I'm hoping its the compressor!

For info.............taken from a previous thread:

I have had enormous problems with my AC............2006 model GTI.  I discovered later that there were serious issues with a certain make of compressor fitted around 2006 and that a Technical Service Bulletin was issued in 2007 to address this problem.
My AC packed up when the car was less than 2 years old and had only about 20K Km on the clock.  What had happened was that the compressor had destroyed itself and deposited all manner of sh1te throughout the AC circuit!  Now a simple compressor replacement and re-gas is a complete waste of time as the sh1te in the circuit will cause a very rapid destruction of the new compressor.  The solution, as outlined in the service bulletin (from page 4), is to replace the condenser (that's the radiater next to the engine cooling radiater in front of the car); replace the compressor with a different make and replace the expansion valve, together with a complete and thorough flushing of the refrigerant circuit.
My French stealers, in their wisdom, simply replaced the compressor...................3 TIMES!!!!!  Imagine the cost! Fortunately all under guarantee.  Anyway, before wrecking a fourth compressor they got wise and replaced the entire system!  This lasted for 6 months over the Winter but when things started to warm up I realised that the cooling was not what is should be so I thought...................Merde! Here we go again!  However the stealers now have a new service manager who is very much on the ball and after verifying that the gas charge was OK they quickly diagnosed the problem as a dodgy interior temperature sensor which was replaced and we now have cooling again!

I have a copy of the Technical Service Bulletin if anybody wants it (in .pdf form) but I do not know how to upload to the

It would be great if you could post up the technical bulletin, I have problems with my MY06 air con at the minute, and I'm out of warranty :(

Do you get free web space from your internet provider?  You could upload it there and post up the link.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I have just had this very same problem  - air con stopped blowing cold air so booked into VW for their Air Con Service for £65 and crossed my fingers as I'm now out of warranty!!!

VW guy comes back after 30/40 mins and says it the compresser and its not cheap !! in fact £1022 not cheap!     I mention this is a known problem  - no it isnt he replies - I then hit him with the TSB I saw mentioned on the very thread.

He looks something up on his screen and acknowledges it is a known problem on all pre 2008 models - he then disappears for 5 mins - he then comes back with the news that he may get a VW contribution as its a known problem - great I think.

He then asks when it was last serviced  - I say a couple of months ago by an Independent Specialist  - but a FVWSH whilst under warranty - in that case he says the VW contribution offer no longer applies  !!!  WTF!

So does anyone know where I can resolve this and get my air con up and running without a remortgage!!!

mines just out of warranty (06) and VW and (the stealer) tried to rob me of £1700 because of a broken compressor.

i refused to pay and they have decided to fix it next week, my car has only done 19k miles and had 3 services.

Compressor problem is a well known fault. Got mine done under warranty last year (2 yrs old). Don't pay up otherwise

Surely if it's a known fault, and they have admitted as much, then being serviced by a main stealer or respected Indy wouldn't change that fact, I would take up direct with vw dealer sounds a prick. Kind of worrying for me since I'm taking mine to it's first Indy soon for service, cambelt, dsg service, aircon refresh, brake fluid change etc.

If I'm Reading the bulletin correctly this is for gti's 06-07 only....

If the car was serviced following VW guidelines and parts, "customers' cars are serviced and repaired to manufacturer-approved standards" following the Block Exemption Rule, VW should consider your claim.

Did they try and regas it first? Or did they just decide that the compressor was Fubar?

Mines booked in for next week. Will let you guys know what happens.

smell seems to have gone now, but strangely doesnt seem as cold as wen i last drove it a week ago!! :undecided:
should it be cold immediately or does the car need to be running for 10min or so for it to go cold??
Title: Re: air con
Post by: arletty69 on 23 May 2009, 16:34
Hope your stealer did not make the same mistake as my frog stealer!  Replacing the compressor alone is NOT sufficient.  The TSB clearly states that the condenser needs to be replaced too and the system thoroughly flushed to remove all the sh1te otherwise the new compressor will quickly fail again!  The sh1te in the system quickly clogs the valves in the compressor which cannot be cleaned, meaning yet another replacement compressor!  Could be that your new compressor is starting to crud up which would mean a gradual reduction in cooling before total failure!

dropped my ED30 at the dealers to look at the air con - was making a strange noise, although it did seem to be working.

just had a call - needs new compressor    but at least its under warranty
thanks to everyone who has contributed to this link - otherwise i would probably not be aware there was a problem with 07 cars.

My car has been back to the dealers this week to re-check the aircon.

Did they look for any leaks, like they said they would : No.
Did they recheck the pressure : No
Did they look for any fault codes : No

The reason is because the the Aircon is blowing cold air. No further action needed.
I would have liked to have known where it had previously lost all its gas from though  :embarassed:
